Morgan Stops 41, Special Teams Lift No. 2 Ohio State to 5-2 Win

Lucy Morgan stopped a career-best 41 shots, while Aly McLeod and Shailynn Snow scored but special teams helped lift the second-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes to a 5-2 win over the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team on Friday afternoon at the D1 in DC Tournament in Arlington, Virginia just outside Washington, D.C.

At the 6:47 mark of the first and on the power play, Chloé Puddifant found McLeod on the doorstep. McLeod's original tip was stopped, but her second shot made it past Buckeye's goaltender Andrea Braendli to put the Saints up 1-0 early on the nationally-ranked Buckeyes.

Jennifer Gardiner evened the score on the power play for the Buckeye's with her first of the game at 11:52.

Saints' goaltender Lucy Morgan made a huge save with 3:24 to play in the first to keep the Buckeye's from taking a one goal lead, but it was the Scarlet and Brown that would take the lead heading into the first break, as Shailynn Snow capitalized on an Ohio State turnover and tallied her third goal of the season at 17:16.

Ohio State would tie the game up once again, as Gabby Rosenthal made it 2-2 with assists from Madison Bizal and Gardiner at 4:36 of the second period.

Gardiner scored her second of the game and another power play goal, giving the Buckeye's their first lead from the top of the circle with a high shot past Morgan at 15:03.

Paetyn Levis added another for Ohio State, increasing the Buckeye's lead to 4-2. Morgan made the initial sliding save, but Levis stuck with the puck and slipped a second shot into the back of the net.

St. Lawrence nearly made it 4-3, with a 2-on-1 advantage as the Buckeye's penalty expired, but Abby Hustler couldn't quite get the puck off her stick in time.

Morgan came up huge once again, stopping a penalty shot opportunity from Levis with 7:55 to play.

Ohio State was called for a trip with one minute remaining in regulation, giving the Saints a 6-on-4 advantage after pulling Morgan.

"We battled hard and played some good hockey to give the No. 2 team in the country an exciting game," said head coach Chris Wells '92. "Ohio State controlled the second period, but we had good chances and opportunities in both the first and the third periods. We fought to the end and we certainly got a lot out of this game moving forward. We'd also like to give a special thanks to the people down in DC for hosting the event."

With 29.3 seconds to play, Ohio State's Sophie Jacques scored the short-handed empty netter for the 5-2 win.

Morgan stopped a career-best 41 shots, while Braendli made 15 saves for Ohio State.

The Buckeyes outshot the Saints 46-17 and went 2-for-2 on the power-play, while the Saints went 1-for-6.

The Saints will take on No. 6/7 University of Minnesota Duluth in the third game of the D1 in DC Tournament tomorrow afternoon at 2:30.
