The St. Lawrence women's hockey team held a 3-1 lead, but the No. 6/7 University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs came back to tie the game in the second and score on the power play to edge the Saints 4-3 in overtime at the D1 in DC Tournament in Arlington, Virginia just outside Washington, D.C. on Saturday afternoon.
Anna Klein pulled the puck off the boards, passed to Elizabeth Giguere who passed back to Klein in slot. Klein went one-on-one with Saints' goaltender
Lucy Morgan to put the Bulldogs up 1-0 early in the first period.
Off the original long-range wrist shot
Kristen Guerriero,
Nara Elia found
Shailynn Snow, who slipped the puck past Emma Soderberg to knot the game 1-1 at 9:12 on the power play.
It was the Saints that would take the lead this time, as Elia tipped the deflection off the shot from the point from
Rachel Teslak for the Saints' second power play goal and the 2-1 lead.
Clara Van Wieren looked to tie the game up once more for Minnesota Duluth, but Morgan was up to the task, keeping the Bulldogs at one.
Morgan made another huge stop and the Saints held their 2-1 lead after one period of play. The Bulldogs held a 9-7 lead in shots after one.
St. Lawrence started off the second period hot as
Chloé Puddifant scored her first goal of the season with a long shot from the blue line, making it 3-1 Saints, one minute and 52 seconds into the frame. Â
Just under three minutes later with a scramble out in front, Mckenzie Hewett tipped the puck past Morgan bringing the Bulldogs back within one with the power play tally. The Bulldogs were quick to even it up once again, as Gabbie Hughes walked in and made it 3-3 off the feed from Giguere.
Both teams produced solid changes in the third, but both goalies were up to the task and the Saints and Bulldogs headed to overtime.
The Bulldogs started overtime with a 4-on-3 advantage, as the Saints
Kristina Bahl was sent to the box at the end of the third for body checking. 44 seconds into overtime Klein slipped a pass to Giguere for the 4-3 overtime win.
"What another great game and effort by our team," said head coach
Chris Wells '92. "We played two top-six teams this weekend and gave ourselves a good idea of where we can play! It's been nice seeing the progression of our team to this point as we head into our last weekend of the semester."
Morgan stopped 26 shots between the pipes for the Saints, while Soderberg made 20 for the Bulldogs.
Minnesota Duluth finished with a 30-23 lead in shots. The Bulldogs finished 2-for-6 on the power play, while the Saints went 2-for-5.
St. Lawrence fell to 7-7-4 on the season, while Minnesota Duluth improved to 7-5-0.
