Sophomore forward
Aly McLeod scored her sixth goal of the season and the game winner, to lift the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 2-1 win over Brown on Saturday afternoon at Appleton Arena.
With the win, the Saints improved to 6-5-4 on the season and 3-2-1 in ECAC play, while Brown fell to 1-8-2 and 1-6-1, respectively.
It was the Bears that struck first though on a 5-on-3 power play opportunity. Cassidy Piersiak skated the puck into the right circle and left the puck off for Maya Mangiafico, who fired a shot from high slot, which Lizzy Gross knocked in from the right of Saints goaltender
Lucy Morgan to put Brown on the board at the 7:56 mark of the first frame.
St. Lawrence had an answer for the Bears.
Laura Cote pulled the puck off the boards and found
Brittney Gout. Gout looked to shoot, but saw
Sophie Holden, who buried the one timer past Bears' goaltender Kaley Doyle at the 12:27 mark.
After one, the Saints led 15-6 in shots.
Just as a Bears' power play expired,
Rachel Bjorgan picked off a pass from Brown, then found McLeod out in front for a one timer and the 2-1 advantage.
Both the Saints and Bears produced solid opportunities throughout the third period, but the Saints were able to close the weekend with the win.
"We gave a real good effort today," said head coach
Chris Wells. "Doyle was excellent in net for Brown today. We found a way to finish strong and kept good composure toward the end of the game. Three points a night in this league is always a good day! Now we get ready for a fun Thanksgiving week in Rochester and in DC!
Morgan finished with 15 saves between the pipes, while Doyle made 38 for Brown.
St. Lawrence finished with a 40-16 lead in shots, while Brown finished 1-for-4 on the power play.
The Saints will have a quick turnaround as they head to Rochester to face RIT on Tuesday, November 23 at 6 p.m. and then will head to Washington D.C. for the D1 in DC Tournament, where they'll face two Big-10 opponents in Ohio State and the University of Minnesota Duluth.
