Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Saints Eek by Ephs to Remain Undefeated

The St. Lawrence women's basketball team beat Williams 65-64 to for their fourth win in as many games on Friday night in Williamstown, Mass. Senior Katie Frederick had 14 points and 13 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season, and was a perfect 4-4 from the free-throw line to lead the way.

Ava McCann had a dozen with a trio of 3-pointers and Sierra Sanson scored 10 first half points, as the Saints went into the break up 38-26. St. Lawrence out-rebounded the Ephs 32-18 in the first half, and nine different Saints came down with at least two boards.

The Saints pounded the paint in the third period, which allowed Frederick to hit three layups. A Frederick jumper from the elbow extended the lead to 53-37, which forced a Williams timeout. Williams came out of the timeout and scored five straight, but another Frederick post move stopped the run, and the Saints retained a 55-42 lead going into the final 10 minutes of regulation.

Williams hit a three to start the fourth and cut the lead to 10, and a free throw cut it to nine. The Ephs were doing their job on the defensive end, and cut the score to 55-49 the closest margin since the opening quarter. A deep two from Abby Doin cut the Williams' run.

McCann looked to have her fourth 3-pointer of the night to put the Saints up nine with just under four to play, but the basket was waved off because her heel was out of bounds. The Ephs continued to get defensive stops, but couldn't find the bottom of the net. A Barringer layup stopped the scoring drought a minute later with a layup, but Williams came down and hit free throw, missed the second but an offensive rebound led to an open three and get within four, with the score 61-57. Head coach Dan Roiger called a time out with two and a half minutes to play as the Saints talked over how to deal with the Williams' full court press.

Williams got a steal and made a layup to cut the lead to two. Dylan Watkiss handled the Eph press and made an acrobatic layup to stop any further run from Williams, and made it a two possession game with 30 seconds to play at 63-59.  Maggie Meehan hit a floater to cut it back to two, and this time the press forced a bad inbound pass and Williams got the ball back on their end, down 63-61 with less than 28 seconds on the clock. The Ephs looked to get an open layup, but Barringer came from the help side to come up with the stuff. Frederick got her 13th rebound of the night and was immediately fouled. She sunk both to put the Saints up 65-61, which turned out to be crucial as Williams hit a buzzer beater three, and the final score read 65-61.

"What a great game tonight," Roiger said. "We played outstanding basketball for the first three quarters today, the best we've played thus far. We defended well, rebounded well, and took care of the ball and got good shots on offense. The fourth quarter we played silly. We tried to force passes that weren't there, had lots of turnovers that led to uncontested layups, and didn't finish defensive possessions to allow them back into the game. But we made some big plays in the final 90 seconds. Olivia's post move was huge, and then Katie had the big free throws. We didn't know we'd need both, but we did."

The Saints out-rebounded the Ephs 58-37, but had 19 turnovers to Williams' 6. The Saints shot over 38 percent from the field, and Williams shot 33 percent.

Sanson ended with a season high 14 for the Saints. Watkiss ended the night with seven points, six rebounds, and four assists.

Maggie Meehan led all scorers with 25 points, and Devin Biesbrock added 15 for Williams.

The Saints take on the Hamilton Continentals on November 20 at 1 p.m. for day two of the Williams College Tournament.
