Elia Scores, Saints Skate to 1-1 Tie with Mercyhurst

Nara Elia scored her third goal of the seaon on the power play tie the game, but the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team skated to a 1-1 with Mercyhurst, closing the two-game series with the Lakers on Saturday afternoon in Erie, Pennsylvania.

Just 53 seconds into the opening frame, Mercyhurst's Grace Nelles put the Lakers up 1-0. Following an original shot from Kristina Bahl that was deflected in the Lakers zone, Marielle Parks tipped the puck to Nelles, who walked in and scored on the breakaway.

Off a deflection on a shot from Rachel Teslak, Kristina Bahl collected the puck but got tied up with a Laker, Elia scooped up the puck, slide to the right around the defense and scored a diving goal to tie the game with 12:41 remaining in the second period. Teslak and Bahl assisted on the power play goal.

Abby Hustler almost secured the win for the Saints with two chances in overtime, but Lakers' goaltender Jenna Silvonen was up to the challenge.

"Well we certainly could have walked away with a win today," said head coach Chris Wells '92. "But a good effort out there today with two even teams. Both goalies made some fantastic saves including the one on a shot from Hustler in overtime. We learned a lot this weekend and now we can turn out attention back to league play next weekend when we host Yale and Brown."

Both teams finished with three good chances apiece in the extra period and an even 28-28 in shot to close the game.

Hustler led the Saints with six shots, while Bahl recorded five and Hillary Sterling, Aly McLeod and Shailynn Snow each recorded three.

Lucy Morgan finished with 27 saves for the Scarlet and Brown, while Silvonen also made 27 for Mercyhurst.

St. Lawrence moved to 5-5-3 on the season, while Mercyhurst moved to 9-4-2.

The Saints will return to ECAC action and host Yale and Brown next weekend, November 19 and 20.
