Saints Skate to 4-4 Tie With No. 9 Yale

The St. Lawrence University women's hockey team opened the weekend with a 4-4 tie against ninth-ranked Yale University on Friday night at Appleton Arena in Canton, New York.

Abby Hustler opened scoring in the game just 22 seconds in to put the Saints up 1-0. Shailynn Snow carried the puck up center ice on the rush and sent the puck to Hustler at the left circle. Hustler fired the puck low and it bounced off Yale goaltender Gianna Meloni's skate and into the back of the net.

The Bulldogs' Anna Bargman evened the score at 1-1 eight minutes later, slipping the puck past St. Lawrence netminder, Lucy Morgan.

Yale took a 2-1 lead with just under five minutes remaining after Claire Dalton scored a shorthanded goal off a turnover.

St. Lawrence answered back with a special teams goal of their own with one minute and 22 seconds left in the period to even up the score. With the Saints on the power play, Rachel Teslak fired a shot from the point and Nara Elia backhanded the rebound into the net past Meloni to tie the game at 2-2.

And the Scarlet and Brown quickly took a 3-2 lead only 48 seconds later. Aly McLeod capitalized on a turnover in front of Yale's net and flipped one over the glove of Meloni to close the period.

Despite holding the lead on the scoreboard, the Saints trailed 13-5 in shots after the first twenty minutes of play.

The Bulldogs swapped goaltenders to start the second, and Pia Dukaric played between the pipes for Yale for the remainder of the game.

Just three minutes and 29 seconds into the period, Yale's Emma Seitz was able to even up the score at 3-3.

But Kristen Guerriero regained the lead for the Saints at the period's halfway mark with St. Lawrence's second power-play goal of the game. Rachel Bjorgan sent the puck to Chloé Puddifant at the point, and Puddifant passed it to Guerriero, who skated into the circle and sent one into the far right side of Yale's net.

Then Rebecca Vanstone and the Bulldogs were once again able to tie the game at 4-4 at the 13:53 mark.

Shots were even at 5-5 apiece in the second, but Yale outshot the Scarlet and Brown 12-5 in the third.

The game headed into a five minute, 3-on-3 overtime, and Morgan made two excellent saves to give the Saints a chance at victory, but St. Lawrence was unable to find the back of the net. Both teams earned one-and-a-half points from the tie.

"That was a real gutsy effort by our kids tonight," said head coach Chris Wells '92. "Lots of ebbs and flows in the game tonight that made it entertaining. Yale is as skilled a team we have played all year. They are quick in transition and find the open players consistently on line rushes. That was a big tie for us and nice to see some pucks go in the net!"

Morgan finished the game with 28 saves, while Meloni and Dukaric finished with two and nine saves apiece, respectively.

St. Lawrence went 27-for-52 at the face-off circle and was two-for-five on the power-play.

The Saints now stand 5-5-4 overall and 2-2-1 in conference play, while Yale is now 6-2-1 and 4-2-1.

The Scarlet & Brown host Brown University tomorrow at Appleton Arena at 3:00 p.m.
