Ava McCann scored seven of the team's 11 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 25 points to lead the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team past SUNY Poly 74-48 on Saturday afternoon in Burkman Gymnasium.
Katie Frederick had 13 points and 13 rebounds for her second double-double in as many games.
The Saints got out to a ten-point lead midway through the first quarter, and
Stella Davis hit back-to-back 3-pointers to end the quarter with St. Lawrence up 25-10. SUNY Poly was not able to close the gap in the second quarter, and the Saints were able to extend their lead and go into halftime up 43-26.
The third quarter started as a back-and-forth battle, but McCann hit her third three of the quarter to give the Saints their biggest lead of the day at 24.
McCann hit her seventh and final three of the day to start the fourth quarter, and a layup by sophomore
Cam Roberts a few minutes later extended the lead to 27. The Wildcats were not able to get the difference closer than 23 for the rest of the ball game.
"We did a nice job of executing our offense and played very unselfishly," said head coach
Dan Roiger. "Stella and Dylan really found teammates and we shot the ball well. We still get in some trouble trying to do too much too quickly, but those are growing points for our team. With experience, we are starting to play better defense and learning how to execute a defensive game plan. I really like the potential of this team, if we can be relentless in our pursuit of disciplined basketball, we can play at a high level."
Stella Davis had six assists and six points, while
Dylan Watkiss had five and two steals in addition to her seven points.
The Saints shot 47.4 percent from the field and 42.3 percent from beyond the arc, compared to the Wildcats, who went 29.8 percent from the field and just three of 13 from three.
Molly Burdick led Poly with 15 points and eight rebounds. Kierra Connor added seven points and 10 boards.
Both teams came down with 43 rebounds, but the Wildcats had 16 offensive boards versus the Saints' 10.
