Box Score Reilly Moran scored his first goal of the season, but the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team fell 7-1 in the second game of the weekend set with Lake Superior State at Taffy Abel Arena on Saturday night.
The Skating Saints fell to 1-2-2 on the season, while the Lakers improved to 6-3-1.
The Lakers struck first for the second night in a row just three minutes and 24 seconds into the contest. Following a successful penalty kill, Lake Superior State was able to establish possession in the Saints' zone. After getting a pass from Jacob Bengtsson, Harrison Roy attempted to snipe a short side shot on
Grant Adams. The shot went wide and off the outside iron, then ricocheted into the slot, where Dawson Tritt was stationed. Tritt had to turn around towards his goal to corral the puck, then spun and fired over the blocker of Adams to put them up 1-0.
The Skating Saints got an equalizer less than two minutes later off an off-speed shot from the slot.
Luke Erickson started the scoring play by finding
Philippe Chapleau in the offensive end. The first-year defender dished a pass of to Moran, who was flashing into the slot for St. Lawrence. Moran's shot was slowed down as a defender got a stick on him. The slower paced shot had just enough heat to go off the far post and in to tie the game at 1-1.
Lake Superior got a lucky bounce later in the period to break the tie again. On the power play, Jacob Nordqvist passed a puck over to Oliver Mitchell, who unloaded a slap shot on the Saints net. The puck ping-ponged off two St. Lawrence penalty killers and in for the 2-1 lead. The goal was the first power play goal given up by the Saints, breaking their season-long streak.
Three minutes and three seconds into the second, the Lakers extended their lead to 3-1. Miroslav Mucha had the puck on the blueline and fired a wrist shot that was stopped by Adams. The rebound was collected by Louis Boudon, who shoveled a backhand over the sprawling Adams for the two-goal lead.
Boudon got his second of the period with just over two minutes left, when he tipped a shot in front of the net. Bengtsson fired a low wrist shot on the power play for the Lakers looking for sticks in front of Adams. Boudon was able to get a blade on the shot and redirect the puck through the five-hole to take the 4-1 lead.
The Lakers added three goals in the final moments, as Josh Nixon scored an empty-net goal for Lake Superior. Shortly after, Boudon scored a hat-trick goal, and Dustin Manz added the final goal to end the game.
Adams stopped nine shots in his first career game for the Scarlet and Brown. Seth Eisele stopped 23 shots in the win for Lake Superior State.
