The St. Lawrence volleyball team defeated Potsdam in four sets on Tuesday evening in Potsdam, N.Y. to complete the regular season sweep of the Bears.
The Saints took the first set by a score of 25-21. The Bears came back to take the second 23-25. The Saints bounced back and won the third set 25-20 to lead the match 2-1.
In the fourth set St. Lawrence had match point with a 24-22 lead, but a pair of kills by Potsdam leveled the score. An attack error by the Bears gave the Saints match point, but another kill from Potsdam's leading attacker Jessica Ader tied the set at 25. A kill by
Natalie Piper gave the Saints their fourth match point, and a kill by
Vivian Zymeck secured the match with a 27-25 win in the fourth and final set.
"Tonight's win could easily be put into the 'gritty not pretty' category," said head coach
Shelly Roiger. "Our ball control was putrid to begin the match and then the team found their focus and started to compete. We had a nice run late in the set to take the lead 1-0. Potsdam made a nice rally to take set 2 and then we were fortunate to close our sets 3 and 4 in tight fashions. We had some individuals really step up in their roles with libero
Reagan Collier-Hogan having the best match of her career and Nat and Annika continue to lead us on the pins. Zymeck gave us some timely kills and Allie made better decisions as the night progressed.
Madison Amico Also came up big with a service ace to end set three, and she made some solid defensive plays as well. While it wasn't our best night, it was a win on the road that we were able to grind out and Potsdam always plays scrappy at their place, so we'll take the 'W.'"
Natalie Piper led the Saints with 23 kills and three service aces.
Annika Kreppein had 20 kills and 14 digs. Setter
Allie Posnick had 47 assists and three aces. Collier-Hogan had 30 digs to lead the defense.
Ader and Megan Henry had 25 of the Bears' 49 kills. Emme Price added eight kills and six blocks for Potsdam, Alyssa Rogers had 29 assists as the setter, and libero Nikki Ramirez had 28 digs.
The Saints had 10 service aces to Potsdam's three, but the Bears led in blocks 6-2.
The Saints won the first matchup on October 12 in straight sets. The class of '22 is 6-0 against Potsdam in their career, and the first class to go unbeaten against the Bears in over a decade.
