First-year quarterback
Daniel Lawther was 21-for-33 passing for a career-high 209 yards and rushed for 40 yards, while
Jacob Dreisbach recorded nine tackles, but the St. Lawrence University football team fell to Hobart, who received 51 votes in the latest D3football.com poll, 17-13 following a late touchdown on Saturday afternoon in Geneva, New York.
Jamie Battaglia rushed for 36 yards on eight attempts, while
Andrew Murphy made four catches for 71 yards, and
TJ Cornacchia made five for 55 yards.
Devin Kelley and
Reece Gillette both recorded seven tackles, while Kelley finished with 2.5 tackles for the loss, Gillete recorded one sack and
Tyler Liddy punted for 203 yards on six punts.
St. Lawrence deferred and Hobart got the game rolling on offense,
Ryan Watson picked off the pass from Statesman quarterback David Krewson, forcing the Statesman to turn the ball over early in the game.
With the Saints on their first drive of the game,
Tyler Grochot rushed for two yards but was taken down by Bryan Aguilar and first-year quarterback
Daniel Lawther came in to play the rest of the game in the relief effort for the Saints.
Hobart's Tobias Wefering attempted a 47-yard field goal at the 7:17 mark of the first quarter, but came up empty handed. Just over three minutes later with the Statesman back on the ball, Rayshawn Boswell rushed for 64 yards and Rob DiGregorio's kick was good for the 7-0 lead with 3:36 to play in the first.
With 6:47 to play in the second quarter, DiGregorio scored three on a 40-yard field goal to put the Statesman up 10-0. Hobart maintained its 10-0 lead at the break.
St. Lawrence fired up their offense after halftime. Lawther connected with
Andrew Murphy on a 46-yard pass to put the Saints back in scoring territory, but the Saints settled for a 27-yard field goal from
Ian Doin, making the score 10-3.
The Saints held a 111-33 yard advantage in the third quarter, but were unable to add to their score.
It was Saints on the move in the fourth frame. At the 11:06 mark of the fourth,
Owen O'Brien intercepted a pass from Krewson putting the Saints back in control. Lawther connected on two passes and
Davin Sweeney made the one-yard run for his first touchdown of the season, capping a 60-yard drive for the Saints. Doin's kick was good for the extra point and tie game.
The Saints' defense stood strong forcing the Statesman to punt. St. Lawrence looked for another touchdown and a roughing passer penalty from Hobart put the Scarlet and Brown within range. The play ended with a 21-yard field goal from Doin, giving the Saints a 13-10 lead.
With 44.9 seconds, Hobart's Krewson found Alex Labella for a late touchdown. The kick was good for the 17-13 advantage. The Saints controlled the final drive of the game, but unfortunately time expired on the Scarlet and Brown's offense.
Krewson was 11-for-28 passing for 155 yards for the win, while Boswell rushed for 120 yards on 13 attempts. Tim Denham Jr. caught two passes for 39 yards and Aguilar finished with 11 tackles and James Mahoney recorded two tackles for the loss.
St. Lawrence finished with a 17-12 edge in first downs after a strong second half. Hobart finished with a 360-321 lead in total offense, but 10 penalties for 95 yards plagued the Statesman squad.
Hobart improved to 6-1 on the season and 2-1 in Liberty League play, while the Saints fell to 3-4 and 0-3, respectively.
The Saints will return to Leckonby Stadium to host the University of Rochester Yellowjackets on Saturday, October 30 at 1 p.m.
