Saints Close Weekend With a 2-2 Tie

Kristina Bahl and Aly McLeod scored their first goals of the season as the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team capped off the weekend with a 2-2 tie against Syracuse in a non-league game on Saturday afternoon at Appleton Arena in Canton, New York.

A late penalty gave Syracuse the man-up advantage and Lauren Bellefontaine found the back of the net at the 14:09 mark, giving the Orange a 1-0 lead.

But despite trailing by one, the Saints outshot the Orange 14-6 as the first period came to a close.

Then Kristina Bahl got the Saints on the board one minute and 57 seconds into the second, tying the game up at 1-1. Hillary Sterling found Bahl in front of the goal crease, and Bahl deflected the puck past the Syracuse goalie and into the net.

St. Lawrence put on the pressure in the second period, holding the Orange to a scoreless period and outshooting Syracuse 9-6.

Aly McLeod gave the Saints a 2-1 lead at the 10:43 mark in the third period. Abby Hustler passed to Shailynn Snow at the blue line, who sent the puck across the ice to McLeod, and McLeod fired a one-timer into the back of the net.

Syracuse answered back just over five minutes later with a goal from Abby Moloughney after a scramble in front of St. Lawrence's goal, tying the game at 2-2.

After three periods of play, St. Lawrence had outshot Syracuse 31-21 and the game headed into overtime.

The Saints had some great breakaway chances, but were unable to find the back of the net. St. Lawrence finished with three shots in overtime, while Syracuse finished with one.

"What an exciting game," said head coach Chris Wells '92. "Both teams played hard and deserved to win. Each goalie had some great saves and an exciting 3x3 for fans finished off the weekend. We played our best game of the short season so far and we have a week off to continue to work on things. The energy around the team and in Appleton was great to see and feel!"

Saints' goalkeeper Lucy Morgan had 20 saves to her name after the final whistle, and Syracuse's Arielle DeSmet finished with 32.

St. Lawrence is now 2-0-2 on the season, while Syracuse stands 0-1-1.

The Saints have next weekend off, then resume play with a non-league game against Clarkson University on October 15 at 6 p.m. in Appleton Arena.
