Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Saints Fall to Clarkson in Non-League Play

First-year Abby Hustler scored her first collegiate goal to put the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team up 1-0, but Clarkson scored two goals in the second period en route to a 2-1 win on Friday night at Appleton Arena.

Hustler put the Scarlet and Brown on the board just over 11 minutes into the first frame. Off the locked faceoff, Aly McLeod won the draw, got the puck to Rachel Bjorgan. Bjorgan found Hustler out in front and she ripped a shot just under the crossbar for the goal.

Shots remained an even 8-8 after one period of play.

Jenna Goodwin was the first to put the Golden Knights on the board, tying the game 1-1, nine minutes and 44 seconds in the second period. Goodwin streaked down the left hand side and couldn't get the initial shot off. The puck slide out to the right, where Goodwin was able to get the rebound over Saints' goaltender Lucy Morgan's shoulder for the goal.

Just over four minutes later, a shot from Stephanie Markowski trickled in behind Morgan, as she tried to trap the puck into her arm, for the Golden Knights second goal and the lead. Kristina Schuler earned the assist.

Hustler nearly notched her second of the game, as she was granted a penalty shot after being taken down by Caitrin Lonergan, who was called for hooking, but Michelle Pasiechnyk made the stop.

The Saints pulled Morgan for 16 seconds in the third looking for the extra-attacker advantage, but a faceoff in the Saints' zone forced Morgan back on the ice.

"That was a fast paced game where both teams had great chances, saves and efforts," said head coach Chris Wells '92. "It was nice to have a playoff type game in October. We did a great job on the penalty kill in the second and had some nice chances to tie it in the third. Clarkson did a real good job at the end of the game not allowing us to get Lucy out for an extended period of time. There is a lot to like about our team and the effort."

Morgan made 26 saves for the Saints, while Pasiechnyk made 19 for the Golden Knights.

Clarkson outshot St. Lawrence 28-20, including a 12-6 lead in the second period, but the Saints managed to kill off all eight minutes of penalties and held a 31-22 advantage in faceoffs.

Clarkson improved to 4-0-1 on the season, while the Saints fell to 2-1-1.

The Saints will make the trip across town to Cheel Arena tomorrow afternoon to face the Golden Knights in their second-non-league matchup at 3 p.m.
