Saints Top Plattsburgh, 3-1

The St. Lawrence volleyball team defeated the Cardinals of Plattsburgh State 3-1 on Thursday night in Plattsburgh, N.Y.

The Saints took the first two sets 25-15 and 25-18. Senior Reagan Collier-Hogan, who's previous match high was seven assists, had 12 assists in the first set.

The Cardinals came back in the third and easily beat St. Lawrence 25-6. The Saints had 10 errors in the set.

The fourth set was close throughout, with neither team ever leading by more than four. The Saints reached match point off of an errant Cardinal serve, and took the match off of a block by Vivian Zymeck and Collier-Hogan, winning the fourth set 25-23.

"I am so incredibly proud of this team," head coach Shelly Roiger said. "We were without both of our setters and with no practices to prepare for this position difficulty, senior libero Reagan Collier-Hogan stepped in and did an awesome job. We talked beforehand that as a team we needed to all find and give an extra 1 percent tonight, and the team did exactly that. Our first set was a highly efficient one for us with our hitters doing a great job of making smart shots that were aggressive and well placed. This continued in the second set but we were able to overcome some unforced errors with a great serve receive component. In the third set, the tables were completely turned on us and Plattsburgh dominated us in every area. We never got going and our opponent was excellent. The team was challenged after that third set to see what kind of mental toughness they could show. They bounced back and found a way to scratch and claw a win out of the match after being blown away in set three and the match finished fittingly enough wtih a block kill by setter Reagan Collier-Hogan."

The Saints defense was evenly spread. Natalie Piper had 16 digs, libero Madison Amico had a career-high 15, Collier-Hogan and Annika Kreppein had 14, and Katrina Henrich had a career-high ten.

Collier-Hogan finished with 28 assists on the night. Kreppein and Piper had the lion share of kills, contributing 28 of the team's 43.

Plattsburgh's offense was led by Payton Zophy's 11 kills. Emma Rivers and Allyssa Rock split setting duty, recording 14 and 12 assists, respectively.

The Cardinals had eight blocks to the Saints' three, but St. Lawrence had seven service aces to Plattsburgh's six.
