Game Recap: Volleyball |

Saints Split Day at Hamilton Triad

Natalie Piper had 41 kills and Allie Posnick recorded 71 assists on the day, as the St. Lawrence Volleyball team beat Hamilton 3-1 and lost to Wesleyan 3-0 on Saturday afternoon in Clinton, N.Y.

Match 1: St. Lawrence 0, Wesleyan 3

After dropping the first set 25-23, the Saints looked like they would even the game at one apiece. They led 23-21, but would never see set point as two Kate Long kills and two Saints errors would give the second set to the Cardinals.

Now down 2-0 the Saints looked to force a game four, but could not get the offense going. After a few Wesleyan runs, St. Lawrence trailed 16-7. They never got the score closer than eight points, and Wesleyan took the set 25-16.

Natalie Piper had a season high 22 kills in the match and Allie Posnick had 38 assists.

Kate Long led the Cardinals with 11 kills.

The Saints finished with four service aces, two blocks, and 55 digs. Wesleyan had 10 blocks and 42 digs.

Match 2: St. Lawrence 3, Hamilton 1

Coming off of the three set loss to Wesleyan, the Saints found themselves in a 7-2 hole early in the first set against Hamilton. A trio of Continental errors put St. Lawrence back in the set, and a six point run including two aces from Annika Kreppein gave the Saints an 11-8 lead. The set remained close, until a five point run put the Saints up six. The teams traded points, and a Piper kill off of a Posnick assist gave the set to the Saints with a score of 25-19.

In the second set the Saints jumped out to a 10-6 lead, and the next 12 points were all side outs, and the Saints led 16-12. This back and forth would continue, with neither team being able to get runs going, which would lead to the Saints taking set two by a score of 25-18.

Hamilton would force a fourth set by taking the third 25-15. The Saints dropped 13 points in the set off of errors, and no one had more than two kills.

The Saints scored four of the first five points in the fourth set, including two kills from first year Rachel Boudreau. A few points later the Saints scored five straight points off of Continental errors to extend their lead. Another attack error from Hamilton gave the Saints match point, and a few points later Posnick found Piper again to take the set 25-20, and the match 3-1.

Piper again led all players, this time with 19 kills. Reagan Collier-Hogan had 18 of the Saints' 50 digs. Kreppein and Posnick each had three service aces. Posnick had 33 of the team's 36 assists. With Piper's 12th kill of the match, she now has the fifth most kills in Saints' history.

Kate Carman lead the Continentals with 15 kills, and Melissa Morelli had 27 assists.

"Today was probably our best day of volleyball this season," head coach Shelly Roiger said. "We played very well against an excellent Wesleyan team and if we hadn't shot ourselves in the foot a few times, we actually should have been up 2-0 in that match instead of losing both sets 23-25. After a very short rest, the team got on the attack in set one. We controlled the first contact in the first two sets and then we fell apart in set three again. I'm proud of the grit this team showed in set four to take the match, led by warrior Allie Posnick. After a bit of rest, I'm looking forward to an awesome week of preparation for two Liberty League matches on the road."

In the third match of the day Wesleyan beat Hamilton 3-2.
