Saints to Face Colgate Tonight in First of Three

The St. Lawrence University men's hockey team will face Colgate tonight at 5 p.m. in Hamilton, New York, in the first of three meetings between the teams this week. The Saints will host the Raiders on Saturday at 7 p.m. and again on Sunday at 5 p.m.

SAINTS GAME NOTES

LAST WEEK

  • St. Lawrence opened the 2020-21 season with a pair of games with No. 12/13 Quinnipiac last week, playing to a 2-2 tie/shootout loss in its season opener last Thursday at Appleton Arena before beating the Bobcats 4-2 in Hamden, Connecticut.
  • Emil Zetterquist was named the ECAC Hockey MAC Goaltending Goalie of the Week honors after stopping 70 of 74 shots he faced last week. His .946 save percentage was the best in the league, while his 1.92 goals against average ranked second.
  • First-year forward Greg Lapointe scored a goal in each of the Saints' first two games, and Cameron Buhl finished with a goal and two assists. Kaden Pickering and Tim Makowski both had a pair of assists on the weekend.
  • The St. Lawrence penalty kill was tested against the Bobcats; Quinnipiac, which entered the series scoring on 29.8% of its power plays, was held to just 1-for-10 on the man advantage, and the one power play goal came with the Saints skating with a 6-on-4 disadvantage, as Quinnipiac head coach Rand Pecknold pulled goaltender Keith Petruzzelli with the Bobcats trailing by two goals and on the power play.
  • Three of the four goals Quinnipiac scored in the series came in the closing minutes with the Bobcats skating with an extra attacker.

SERIES HISTORY

  • St. Lawrence holds a 80-73-6 record in the all-time series with Colgate, with a 43-22-4 record at home and a 31-45-2 record at Colgate.
  • Colgate won the first game of the series last year, 4-1 at Appleton, and the Saints closed the regular season with a 2-2 tie against the Raiders in Hamilton.
  • The Saints' returning players haven't had much success against the Raiders. David Jankowski has a goal and three assists in four games against Colgate, while Ashton Fry scored a goal and added in assist in the Saints' tie with the Raiders last year.
  • Emil Zetterquist has three career starts against Colgate (2.75 GAA, .910 save percentage, 1-2-0), while Francis Boisvert made 24 saves in last year's tie with the Raiders.

SCOUTING THE RAIDERS

  • Colgate enters this week's series against St. Lawrence tied for third place in the ECAC Hockey standings with one point after opening conference lay with a 4-1 loss and a shootout win after a 1-1 tie in a home-and-home series with Clarkson on Friday and Sunday.
  • The Raiders are 1-2-2 overall, with th eonly win coming against Clarkson (5-4) in overtime on Dec. 23.
  • Four of Colgate's five games have been one-goal games or ties.
  • First-year forward Alex Young, a San Jose Sharks draft pick, leads the team with five poitns on two goals and three assists. Paul McAvoy is the team's leading goal scorer (3-1-4), and Griffin Lunn also has four points on one goal and three assists.
  • Junior Andrew Farrier and first-year Carter Gylander have split time in net so far this season. Farrier has started four games, but Gylander has seen a few more minutes in net and has slightly better numbers with a 2.50 goals against average and a .889 save percentage. Gylander has been the goalie of record in four of the five games and comes into the series with a 1-2-1 record.

LAPOINTE'S HOT START

  • Greg Lapointe's goal at the 3:42 mark of the first period of the' season opener gave the Saints a 1-0 lead over Quinnipiac last Thursday.
  • Lapointe became the first Saint rookie to score the Scarlet and Brown's first goal of the year since Mike Marnell '18 scored at RIT on Oct. 10, 2014.
  • It was the first 1-0 lead in the season opener provided by a St. Lawrence first-year since Gavin Bayreuther '17 scored the first goal of the Saints' season on Oct. 11, 2013 vs. Maine.
  • It was the fastest first goal by a St. Lawrence first-year since Kent Carlson scored in the first two minutes of the game against Queens on Nov. 3, 1980.
  • Lapointe also scored in his second career game, becoming the first to score a goal in his first two games since Marnell in 2014-15. 

STRONG 5x5 PLAY

  • Last week, St. Lawrence allowed four goals in two games. Only one of those goals came during 5-on-5 play.
  • Quinnipiac scored three extra attacker goals with their goaltender on the bench, including one 6-on-4 power play goal.
  • The Saints did not allow a goal in 16:16 of 5-on-4 play against the Bobcats, and also killed off 52 seconds of a 5-on-3 power play in the season opener.
  • St. Lawrence scored four goals in 5-on-5 play in the first two games of the season and added a pair of 5-on-6 empty-net goals on Sunday.

BACK-TO-BACK STRONG STARTS FOR ZETTERQUIST

  • Emil Zetterquist's 33- and 37-save performances last week were the best back-to-back performances in the junior goaltender's career.
  • Allowing just four goals in 125 minutes, Zetterquist's goals against average for the week was 1.92, and his save percentage was .946.
  • His previous best performance over a two-game stretch was a 37- and 36-save performance in a home weekend against Harvard (L, 2-3) and Dartmouth (T, 2-2) as a first-year on Feb. 15-16, 2019. He had a 2.41 goals against average and a .936 save percentage over that weekend.

YET TO TRAIL

  • St. Lawrence scored the first goal in both games last week and has not trailed an opponent through the first two games of the season.
  • The last time the Saints either led or were tied for every second of the season through two games was 1995-96. St. Lawrence played from behind for the first time in its third game that season when Lake Superior State took a 2-1 lead 14:04 into the first period.
