SAINTS GAME NOTES

LAST WEEK

  • St. Lawrence split a home-and-home series with Clarkson last week, winning 2-1 in overtime on Friday at Cheel Arena in Potsdam before falling to the No. 12/13 Golden Knights by the same score on Sunday at Appleton Arena. The Saints enter the weekend tied for second in the ECAC Hockey standings.
  • Luc Salem scored the game-winning goal in overtime in the first game for the Saints, creating a turnover at his own blue line and beating a defender at the Clarkson goaltender before knocking the water bottle off the net with a top-shelf goal just 57 seconds into the extra frame. David Jankowsi had tied the score for St. Lawrence eight minutes into the third period with Cameron Buhl and Philip Alftberg earning assists on the play.
  • The win at Cheel was the first for the Saints against their Route 11 Rivals in Potsdam in nearly six years (Jan. 31, 2015, 2-1).
  • On Sunday, Nicholas Trela scored a power play goal with 0.9 seconds remaining in the first period after winning an offensive zone faceoff with just 1.5 seconds left on the clock to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. Clarkson, however, tied the score on a goal by Zach Teskos just 10 seconds into the second period, and Luke Mobley scored the game-winner early in the third.
  • Emil Zetterquist had another strong week for the Saints, making 70 saves on 73 shots (.959 save percentage) over the two contests.

SERIES HISTORY

  • St. Lawrence holds an 81-74-7 record against Colgate. The Saints are 43-23-5 at home and 32-45-2 on the road against the Raiders.
  • Both teams earned a win, a loss and a tie in the previous three-game set between the Saints and Raiders two weeks ago, with St. Lawrence winning the first game 2-1, losing the second 4-2, then earning two points with a shootout win after a 1-1 tie.
  • Emil Zetterquist started all three games in goal against the Raiders two weeks ago, posting a 2.40 goals against average and a .924 save percentage.
  • David Jankowski has had the most success offensively for the Saints against Colgate. He leads the team with two goals and four assists for six points in seven games played against the Raiders, including one goal and one assist in the three-game set two weeks ago. Philip Alftberg also totaled two points on a goal and an assist in the three-game series.
  • Colgate's Arnaud Vachon totaled one goal and two assists in the team's pervious three-game series.

SCOUTING COLGATE

  • Colgate enters this week's three-game series in fourth place in the ECAC Hockey Standings, five points behind St. Lawrence.
  • Since beating St. Lawrence 4-2 on Jan. 9, the Raiders have scored just one goal, tying the Saints 1-1 on Jan. 10 and losing a pair of 3-0 games to Quinnipiac last weekend.
  • Colgate's offense has struggled this season, totaling just 18 goals in 10 games, ranked 48th out of 51 teams nationally. The Raiders have scored more than one goal in three of their 10 games this season.
  • The Raiders' power play has only accounted for three goals this season and ranks 46th nationally, converting at a clip of 9.4%.
  • Alex Young leads the Raiders offensively with three goals and four assists for seven points. Matt Verboon and Paul McAvoy also have three goals for Colgate.
  • Rookie goaltender Carter Gylander, a Detroit Red Wings draft pick, has started the last four games for Colgate and has a 2.30 goals against average and a .912 save percentage.

BUHL'S HOT START

  • Sophomore forward Cameron Buhl leads St. Lawrence with six points on two goals and four assists through seven games this season.
  • The point total already eclipses his total scoring from his rookie season, when he scored one goal and added four assists in 29 games.
  • Buhl has notced at least one point in five of the Saints' seven games this season.

STRONG 5x5 PLAY

  • St. Lawrence has played exceptional team defense skating 5x5 this season. The Saints have allowed just seven even-strength goals in seven games this season.
  • St. Lawrence has allowed three extra attacker goals, including on 6x4 power play goal. The Saints have also allowed an empty net goal, a shorthanded goal, and two "standard" 5x4 power play goals.

D, PK NATIONALLY RANKED

  • St. Lawrence is ranked fifth nationally in scoring defense, allowing just 1.86 goals per game, nearly a 50% decrease from the 3.61 the team allowed over the course of the 2019-20 season.
  • The Saints have also excelled on the penalty kill, ranking third nationally with a 92.3% success rate. Last season, St. Lawrence finished 58th nationally with a 73.8% penalty kill rate.
  • St. Lawrence has been successful on the PK 12 straight times, a span of more than three games dating back to Matt Verboon's PP goal in the second period of Colgate's 4-2 win over the Saints on Jan. 9.

ZETTERQUIST CONTINUES STRONG PLAY

  • Emil Zetterquist continued his strong start to the season last week, allowing three goals in two games. The seven-game starting streak is the longest in the junior goaltender's career.
  • Zetterquist ranks fifth nationally with a .949 save percentage and is seventh in the nation with a 1.69 goals against average.
  • Zetterquist is the only goaltender to see any action so far this season for St. Lawrence. He eclipsed his total playing to for the entire 2019-20 season last weekend.

FIRST FRIDAY WIN IN NEARLY TWO YEARS

  • St. Lawrence's 2-1 win over Clarkson last Friday night marked the first win for the Saints on Friday in nearly two years.
  • St. Lawrence struggled on Fridays last season, going 0-15-1 to open their weekends in 2019-20. St. Lawrence had not won on a Friday since a 3-2 triumph over Princeton on February 1, 2019. This year's unusual schedule, however, will see the Saints play just five games on Friday during the regular season.

THIRD PERIOD COMEBACK

  • Friday's 2-1 win over Clarkson marked the first time St. Lawrence had won a game when trailing after two periods since Nov. 9, 2019, when the Saints beat Union 3-2 in overtime.
  • Last year the Saints were 1-22-2 when trailing after two periods. St. Lawrence has only trailed after two periods twice this season, going 1-1-0 in those games.

FIRST PERIOD DOMINANCE

  • St. Lawrence's defense has been dominant in the first period of games, allowing just one goal in seven games so far this season.
  • Opponents have scored four goals in the second period and eight goals in the third this season.

SHOT BLOCKING LEADERS

  • Dylan Woolf, Luc Salem and Philip Alftberg have been a big part of the season the Saints have been so good defensively.
  • Woolf, Salem (1.86 blocked shots/game each) and Alftberg (1.71/game) hold the top three spots on the league's blocked shots per game leaderboard.
