SAINTS GAME NOTES

LAST WEEK

  • St. Lawrence enters this weekend's home-and-home series with Clarkson in sole possession of first place in the ECAC Hockey standings with nine points. The Saints took five of a possible nine points in a three-game set with Colgate last week, beating the Raiders 2-1 in Hamilton on Thursday before losing 4-2 on Saturday and earning two points with a shootout win after a 1-1 tie on Sunday.
  • David Jankowski and Cameron Buhl scored goals to give the Saints a 2-0 lead on Thursday, and Emil Zetterquist made 25 saves to earn the win in goal.
  • After falling behind 1-0 in the first period on Saturday, Kaden Pickering scored a shorthanded goal and Nicholas Trela scored his first career goal to give the Saints a 2-1 lead in the second period. The Raiders responded with two more goals in the second and added an empty net goal for the final 4-2 score.
  • Philip Alftberg gave the Saints a 1-0 lead halfway through the second period on Sunday, but Colgate's Josh McKenchney scored a shorthanded goal five minutes into the third period to tie the score. Zetterquist made 30 saves for the Saints and stopped 3-of-5 shootout attempts, while Greg Lapointe, Buhl and Trela converted their shootout attempts to give St. Lawrence two points in the contest.

SERIES HISTORY

  • St. Lawrence holds a 72-132-10 record against Clarkson. St. Lawrence is 45-53-4 at home and 21-67-6 in games on the road against the Golden Knights.
  • Clarkson has won the last five games between the Route 11 Rivals, and nine of the last 10.
  • St. Lawrence's last win over Clarkson was a 4-2 triumph on December 7, 2018. The Saints' last victory at Cheel Arena was nearly six years ago, a 2-1 win on January 31, 2015.
  • With 214 meetings entering the weekend, it's a bit surprising that there have only been 10 ties between the two teams. The last time a St. Lawrence-Clarkson game ended in a tie was on October 31, 2014.
  • David Jankowski has had the most success offensively of the Saints' returning players against Clarkson. In six career games, he has two goals and one assist. Kaden Pickering has one goal and two assists in seven games.
  • Francis Boisvert started two games against Clarkson last year, posting a 2.52 goals against average with a .926 save percentage in a pair of losses.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS

  • Clarkson, ranked 12th/13th nationally, enters this weekend's series in third place in the ECAC Hockey standings, two points behind first-place St. Lawrence.
  • The Golden Knights got out to a much earlier start than St. Lawrence this season and have played eight non-conference games.
  • First-year forward Alex Campbell leads Clarkson with 14 points on four goals and 11 assists. Zach Teskos (3-10-13), Anthony Callin (7-5-12) and Jack Jacome (4-8-12) have also reach double digits in scoring.
  • Ethan Haider (2.67 GAA, .882 save pct.) and Kris Oldham (2.85 GAA, .902 save pct.) have split time in net for Clarkson, though Haider has started in four of five ECAC Hockey contests.
  • Special teams have been a key factor in Clarkson's season. The Golden Knights' power play has converted on 20.4% of their opportunities, but their penalty kill has been scored on 20.8% of the time.

BUHL'S HOT START

  • Sophomore forward Cameron Buhl leads St. Lawrence with five points on two goals and three assists through five games this season.
  • The point total already matches his total scoring from his rookie season, when he scored one goal and added four assists in 29 games.
  • Buhl has notced at least one point in four of the Saints' five games this season.

STRONG 5x5 PLAY

  • St. Lawrence has played exceptional team defense skating 5x5 this season. The Saints have allowed just four even-strength goals in five games this season.
  • St. Lawrence has allowed three extra attacker goals, including on 6x4 power play goal. The Saints have also allowed an empty net goal, a shorthanded goal, and two "standard" 5x4 power play goals.
  • The Scarlet and Brown are tied for sixth nationally in scoring defense, allowing just 2.0 goals per game.

BACK-TO-BACK STRONG STARTS FOR ZETTERQUIST

  • Emil Zetterquist continued his strong start to the season last week, allowing five goals in three games. The five-game starting streak is the longest in the junior goaltender's career.
  • Zetterquist ranks seventh nationally with a .945 save percentage and is 10th in the nation with a 1.75 goals against average.
  • Zetterquist is the only goaltender to see any action so far this season for St. Lawrence. He is just 16:28 away from matching his playing time for the entire 2019-20 season entering the weekend.

FIRST LEAD SURRENDURED

  • When Colgate scored the first goal of the game in the Saints' 4-2 loss last Saturday, it marked the first time this season that St. Lawrence has trailed in a game.
  • St. Lawrence has scored first in four of their five games this season. Last year, the Saints scored first in 13-of-36 games.
