Keenan Suthers scored his team-leading ninth goal of the season and
David Jankowski notched his first of the second half for the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team, but two quick tallies in the second period for visiting Dartmouth helped the Big Green take the lead en route to a 5-2 win over the Saints on Friday night at Appleton Arena.
In addition to Suthers and Jankowski,
Bo Hanson led St. Lawrence with a pair of assists, while
Aleksi Peltonen and
Philip Alftberg finished with a point apiece.
Dartmouth outshot St. Lawrence 39-18 on the night and held the Saints to a combined five shots in the first and third periods. Despite giving up two goals in the frame, the second period was the strongest of the night for the Scarlet and Brown, as they held a 13-8 advantage in shots on goal in that frame.
Brendan Demler opened the scoring for Dartmouth with a shot from the right circle that snuck inside the near post behind St. Lawrence starter
Francis Boisvert at 3:27 of the first period.
Just over five minutes later, Hanson pinched from the blue line and won a battle on the half wall before dishing to Peltonen low on the circle. The Helsinki, Finland native then hit Suthers in the slot for a wrister that beat Dartmouth's Adrian Clark on the glove side for his second goal in as many games to tie the game at 1-1.
Past the midway point of the second period, Jankowski gave the Saints their first lead of the game with a power-play goal at 13:23. Alftberg and Hanson went point-to-point and then set up Jankowski for a snap shot over Clark's right shoulder and into the top of the net to give the Saints a 2-1 lead.
The lead was short-lived, however, as Dartmouth scored two goals exactly one minute apart to take a 3-2 lead heading into the third period.
Drew O'Connor tied the game with his first of two on the night at the 15:05 mark and Tanner Palocsik scored the eventual game winner at 16:05.
Palocsik's tally also signaled the end of the night for Boisvert, who was relieved by senior
Daniel Mannella. Boisvert allowed three goals and finished with 23 saves in just over 36 minutes of play, while Mannella stopped 11 of the 12 shots he faced in 22 minutes and 32 seconds in goal.
O'Connor's second of the night at 12:33 of the third made it 4-2 and, after the Saints pulled Mannella with 1:42 to play, Will Graber tacked on an empty-net goal with 19 seconds to play in regulation to push to the 5-2 margin.
The Saints finished 1-for-5 with the man advantage on Friday night, while Dartmouth went 0-for-4.
With the loss, St. Lawrence is now 3-24-4 on the year with a 1-17-1 mark in ECAC Hockey contests. Dartmouth improves to 12-10-4 and 9-8-2 against conference opponents.
St. Lawrence will play its final game in Appleton Arena on Saturday, February 21 against No. 20 Harvard, with puck drop set for 7 p.m. The Saints will recognize the five members of the Class of 2020 in a pregame on-ice ceremony.
