Andrew McIntyre put the St. Lawrence men's hockey team out in front 58 seconds into Saturday's game and the Saints never looked back, posting a 6-3 upset win over visiting No. 20 Harvard in their final game of the season at Appleton Arena.
Six different players scored goals against the Crimson, 13 players recorded at least one point and seniors
Alex Gilmour,
Michael Laidley and
Ryan Garvey all factored into the scoring as well. Fellow senior
Daniel Mannella was stellar in the pipes for the Saints, making 27 saves for his third win of the season.
St. Lawrence outshot Harvard 37-30 in the win, which now gives them a 4-24-4 record overall and 2-17-1 mark in conference play. Harvard falls to 12-9-6 and 10-5-5 against ECAC Hockey teams.
The Saints' fourth line opened the scoring as
Callum Cusinato and Laidley cycled to the right of Harvard starter Mitchell Gibson, before Cusinato sent a pass from below the red line to McIntyre on the near post for a quick finish across the crease and a 1-0 Saints' lead in the opening minute.
With time winding down in the opening frame,
David Jankowski buried the rebound from a shot by
Bo Hanson to extend the lead to 2-0 heading into the first intermission.
In the latter half of the second period,
Jacob Nielsen second of the season, when he jumped on the rebound off a blast from the point by
Dylan Woolf at the 11:48 mark for a 3-0 game.
At 15:39,
Alex Gilmour took advantage of a Harvard turnover as they tried to break out of their own defensive zone and left a pass for
Kaden Pickering on the left circle. Pickering cut between two defenders, had his initial shot saved by Gibson and then got his own rebound and beat the Crimson netminder with a shot on the glove side to push the Saints' lead to four goals with the eventual game winner.
Pickering's goal and a fracas in the corner to end the period ignited the Appleton Arena crowd, who sent the Saints' into the second intermission to an overwhelming "S-L-U" chant.
After two periods without a penalty call, each team had two power-play chances in the third. Harvard, who entered Saturday's game with a 30.8% power play, cashed in on its first chance of the night, as John Farinacci spoiled Mannella's shutout bid a 5:04 the final frame.
Just over a minute and half later, however, Garvey helped the Saints regain their four-goal lead with his sixth of the season at 6:47.
The play started when
Aleksi Peltonen chipped the puck high off the glass in the defensive zone and into neutral ice for Garvey, who carried into Harvard territory before taking a wrister from high in the slot that beat Gibson glove side yet again.
Following Garvey's goal, Gibson was replaced by Cameron Gornet in goal. Gibson finished with 26 saves in 46:47 or work. Gornet stopped all five shots he faced in 10:40.
Harvard cut the deficit to 5-3 with back-to-back goals from Henry Bowlby and Ryan Siedem, the latter of which was shorthanded, but the Saints iced the win with six seconds to play as Peltonen won the race to a loose puck deep in the Harvard zone and tucked it into the empty net with six seconds to play to finish out the scoring.
The empty-net goal was the first of the season and first for the program since 2017-18.
Saturday's win snapped a winless slide that spanned 21 games, dating back to November 15 and marked the first time the Saints had scored six goals since October 28, 2017 at Wisconsin, which was also a 6-3 win. In addition, Saturday was the first win for the Saints over the Crimson in five years and two days, having last beaten them on February 20, 2015.
The Saints honored the five members of the Class of 2020 –
Ryan Garvey,
Carson Gicewicz,
Alex Gilmour,
Michael Laidley and
Daniel Mannella – in a pregame ceremony on Saturday night.
St. Lawrence will close out the regular season next weekend at Cornell and Colgate.
