The starting pitchers for the 13th-ranked Ithaca College softball team allowed just two runs on five hits to defeat St. Lawrence by 8-2 and 7-0 scores in a Liberty League doubleheader on Saturday afternoon in Ithaca.
Haley Congdon threw a four-hitter in the first game, and Beth Fleming took a no-hitter into the seventh inning of the second game before
Angelina Carney smacked a one-out single to right. St. Lawrence fell to 10-6 overall and 0-2 in conference play, while Ithaca is now 13-5-1, 2-0.
Ithaca 8, St. Lawrence 2
The Saints took a 2-0 lead on a two-run double by
Sofia Adams in the top of the first inning, but the Bombers tied the score in the bottom of the inning, then took the lead for good in the second.
Vanessa Brown was 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and four RBI for the Bombers. She hit a solo home run in the first, added an RBI single to give Ithaca a 3-2 lead in the second, and added a two-run double in the third inning to cap the scoring.
Alex Wright was also 3-for-4 for the Bombers, while Annie Cooney was 2-for-3 and Hannah Anderson was 2-for-4.
Gabby Slater hit a double for the Saints, and
Angelina Carney and
Carolyn Holran hit singles.
Congdon allowed two runs (one earned) with six strikeouts and one walk. Slater allowed four runs on nine hits with one strikeout and one walk in 5.1 innings of work for the Saints, while
McKailey Lyndaker allowed four runs on four hits with one walk in two-thirds of an inning.
Ithaca 7, St. Lawrence 0
Fleming was two outs away from hurling a no-hitter, but Carney broke up the no-hit bid with a single to right with one out in the seventh. Fleming struck out 11 and walked two in the complete game victory.
Brown was 3-for-4 with three RBI for the Bombers. Ellie Murray was 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Cooney and Abby Shields were also 2-for-3. Wright was 2-for-4 in the nightcap.
Caroline Young took the loss, allowing two runs on seven hits with one walk and one strikeout in 3.1 innings. Slater allowed four runs on five hits with one strikeout in 1.2 innings, while Lyndaker allowed one run on two hits in one inning of work.
