Hein Powers Saints to Sweep of SUNY Potsdam

Skylar Hein was a combined 6-for-8 with three doubles and four RBI to lead the St. Lawrence University softball team to 8-3 and 6-3 wins over SUNY Potsdam in a non-league doubleheader on cold and windy Wednesday afternoon at Saints Softball Field.

Sofia Adams was 4-for-7 with a double, a triple and three RBI for the Saints, while McKailey Lyndaker allowed just one run on three hits in 5.2 combined innings of relief work in the circle.

"I am really proud of this team; their effort all season has been tremendous," said St. Lawrence head coach Elisa VanKirk. "Today they fought through the weather and played two excellent games. It was a total team effort as it has been all season."

St. Lawrence improved to 10-4 on the season, while SUNY Potsdam fell to 5-9.

St. Lawrence 8, SUNY Potsdam 3
St. Lawrence fell behind 2-0 in the first game after an infield single by Megan Fish in the first and an RBI groundout by Vanessa Brandt in the second, but the Saints came back with four runs in the bottom of the second and never relinquished the lead.

Lauryn Best belted an RBI double to the gap in left center to start the rally, and Gabby Slater plated Best with a single to right to tie the score. Slater and Taylor Armijo scored later in the inning on an error.

The Saints added four more runs two innings later, with Hein knocking in a pair with a double to center, then scoring on a triple to left by Adams. Lyndaker plated Adams with a bloop to center.

The Bears threatened to get back in the game in the top of the fifth, loading the bases with one out. Abby Vaughn hit a single that snuck through the right side to score on run, but Lyndaker came on in relief of Saints starter Caroline Young to get the final two outs of the inning, catching a comeback line drive for the second out, then inducing a groundout to the circle to end the threat.

Hein and Best were both 3-for-4, with Best hitting two doubles, while Angelina Carney and Slater were both 2-for-4 for the Saints.

Vaughn was 2-for-3, while Lucy Condon went 2-for-4 for SUNY Potsdam.

Young allowed three runs (two earned) in 4.1 innings of work, scattering 10 hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Lyndaker was perfect over the final 2.2 innings with one strikeouts.

Fish took the loss, allowing four runs (one earned) on six hits in two innings. Alissa McCauley allowed four more runs on seven hits in three innings of work, while Sierra Ashley allowed a hit and a walk in one inning.

St. Lawrence 6, SUNY Potsdam 3
The Saints built an early lead and withstood a comeback attempt by SUNY Potsdam in the nightcap.

Elle Gray scored the first run in the bottom of the first on an RBI groundout by Hein. St. Lawrence took advantage of a pair of miscues to add two more runs in the second, with Lyndaker scoring on a wild pitch and Carolyn Holran scoring on an error in the outfield.

Hailey LaGuidice cut the lead to one run with a two-run double in the fourth, but the Saints restored the three-run margin with two runs in the bottom of the inning, with Hein hitting a two-out double to right center to score Armijo, then scoring on a single by Adams.

Grace Folmsbee plated a run for SUNY Potsdam with an infield single in the fifth inning, but the Saints added an insurance run in the sixth on back-to-back two-out doubles by Hein and Adams.

Adams was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI for the Saints, while Hein was 3-for-4 with two RBI and two doubles. Gray also hit a double for St. Lawrence.

Brooke Falsion led the Bears' offense, going 2-for-3, while Folmsbee was 2-for-4.

Slater earned the win, allowing two runs on four hits with six strikeouts and two walks in four innings. Lyndaker earned the save, allowing one run on three hits with three strikeouts over the final three innings.

Ashley took the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits with two strikeouts and one walk in 1.1 innings. Fish pitched well over the final 4.2 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
