Young, Slater Pitch Complete Game Shutouts to Sweep Mustangs

Caroline Young and Gabby Slater threw complete game shutouts, and Elle Gray was 4-for-6 with a double, a triple and five runs scored to lead the St. Lawrence University softball team to 7-0 and 9-0 victories of Morrisville State on Tuesday afternoon at Saints Softball Field.

Taylor Armijo was 4-for-4 on stolen base attempts, including three in the first game, the second-most in St. Lawrence program history. Armijo now has 17 stolen bases on the season, good for fifth in program history, and 31 in her career, which ranks second behind Meredith Eisenhut '03, who had 83.

The Saints snapped an eight-game losing streak wtih the sweep, improving to 12-12 overall; Morrisville fell to 1-25.

Young scattered six hits and one walk, striking out seven to earn her seventh victory of the season in the opener.

The Saints scored four runs in the first inning, with Armijo leading off with a walk, stealing second then scoring on an RBI single by Gray. Angelina Carney followed with a deep shot down the left field line for an RBI double and advanced to third on the throw home. Carney then scored on a sacrifice fly by Skylar Hein, and McKailey Lyndaker added an RBI groundout to close out the scoring in the inning.

St. Lawrence added two more runs in the second, with Armijo once again as the catalyst to get things started. After she hit a single to left, the junior from El Segundo, California, stole second and third base before scoring  on an RBI single by Carney. Carolyn Holran added an RBI single to score Carney.

Sofia Adams added an RBI triple in the fourth cap the scoring for the Saints.

Gray, Carney and Holran were all 2-for-4 for the Saints, while Adams was not retired in the game, as she worked two walks and was hit by a pitch, in addition to hitting her triple.

Savannah Hobbie was 2-for-4 to lead the Mustangs' offense. Kellina Murphy allowed five earned runs on seven hits and three walks with one strikeout in a complete game effort for Morrisville State.

The Saints once again jumped on the Mustangs early, scoring six runs in the first, and Slater needed just 35 pitches in a five-inning two-hitter to post the Saints' second shutout of the day.

The first five batters reached safely for the Saints, with Armijo scoring the first run of the game on a line drive by Carney that was mishandled by the right fielder. Hein added an RPI single, and Elizabeth Norton, pinch running for Carney, slid home safely on a fielder's choice ground ball by Holran. Lyndaker added a two-run triple to right, and Slater followed with an RBI single to center.

The Saints added single runs in the second, third and fourth to push the lead beyond the eight-run rule margin. Gray hit a triple, then scored on a wild pitch in the second, while Slater and Carney added RBI singles in the third and fourth innings, respectively.

Slater was dominant in the circle, retiring the last 10 batters she faced. She struck out four and had six ground ball outs and five fly ball outs for her third victory of the season and first shutout of her career.

Gray was 2-for-2 with a double, a triple and three runs scored. Slater was also 2-for-2 for the Saints, while Hein was 2-for-3. Ciera Sprague and Mackenzie Lawrence had the hits for the Mustangs.

Chyne Kennedy took the loss for Morrisville, allowing seven earned runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts and one walk in four innings pitched.
