Saints Sweep Wells to Run Win Streak to Four

McKailey Lyndaker was a combined 4-for-5 at the plate and allowed just one run on five hits in a complete game victory in the second game to lead the St. Lawrence University softball team to 12-4 and 9-1 wins over Wells College at Saints Softball Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Lyndaker went 2-for-2 with two RBI and a walk in the first game and went 2-for-3 with a triple, a stolen base and three runs scored in the nightcap. She struck out three and walked two batters in five innings, as the Saints closed out the second game in five innings due to the eight-run rule.

The Saints, winners of four straight games, improved to 14-12 overall, while Wells fell to 2-18 on the season.

St. Lawrence 12, Wells 4
Skylar Hein and Lauryn Best both belted two-run home runs over the center field fence in the opener to lead the Saints' offense to their second double-digit run total of the season.

The Express took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Naomi Kubo scored on a passed ball, but the Saints took the lead for good in the second, with Sofia Adams scoring on a wild pitch and Best hitting her second home run of the season to score two more.

Gabby Sawyer cut the lead to one, scoring another run on a wild pitch in the third, but the Saints responded with three more runs in the bottom half of the frame, with Hein smashing her second home run of the season and Lyndaker adding an RBI single to center.

Hein added an RBI double in the following inning to up the St. Lawrence lead to 7-2, but Wells added two runs in the fourth, with Carley Ryan capping the scoring in the inning with an RBI single through the right side.

Best got a run back for St. Lawrence in the bottom of the fifth with a bloop RBI single down the right field line, and the Saints put the game away with four runs in the sixth inning thanks to RBI doubles by Angelina Carney and Hein, an RBI triple by Carolyn Holran, and a walk-off RBI single into the gap in right by Lyndaker to bring Holran home and invoke the eight-run rule.

Hein was 3-for-4 with four RBI to power the Saints' offense, while Best and Carney were both 2-for-3. Kubo was 2-for-2 to lead the Express, while Sawyer was 2-for-3.

Caroline Young earned the win for the Saints, allowing four runs on six hits with three strikeouts and one walk in 4.1 innings. Gabby Slater picked up a save, coming in with a three-run lead in the fifth and allowing two hits with three strikeouts over the final 1.2 innings.

Kubo took the loss, allowing 12 runs (11 earned) on 14 hits with four strikeouts and three walks in a complete game effort.

St. Lawrence 9, Wells 1
The Saints scored in every inning in the nightcap, putting the game away with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to again invoke the eight-run rule. St. Lawrence took advantage of five errors by the Express to score four unearned runs.

Elle Gray led the Saints' offense in the second game, going 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and two stolen bases, including a steal home on a double steal to give the Saints a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

Slater added an RBI double in the second and an RBI single in the third, and Best hit an RBI single to center to give the Saints a 6-0 lead after three innings.

Wells had an opportunity for a big inning in the fourth when Lizzie Monnat led off with a double, Jenna Devora followed with an infield single, and McLain dropped a perfect bunt down the first base line to load the bases with no outs. But Lyndaker got the next two batters on a soft line drive and a comebacker to the circle to throw out Monnat on a force play at home. Tori Miller worked a bases loaded walk to plate a run for Wells, but Lyndaker struck out Ellie Schwoebel to end the inning with minimal damage done.

Gray led off the fourth inning with a triple, and Carney hit a sacrifice fly to give St. Lawrence a 7-1 lead. Lyndaker led off the fifth with a single and, after two outs were recorded, stole second and came all the way around to score after two errors were made on the play. Taylor Armijo followed with a single to left, stole second, and Gray ended the game with an RBI double to right center.

Armijo, who stole three bases on the day, now has 20 on the season, good for fourth on the Saints' single-season stolen bases list. St. Lawrence Hall of Famer Meredith Eisenhut '03, who holds the top three positions on the list, established the program record in the Saints' inaugural season with 25 in 2000.

Lyndaker and Slater were both 2-for-3 at the plate for the Saints, while Armijo was 2-for-4. Autumn McLain led the Express, going 2-for-2.

Lyndaker improved to 3-1 on the season with her second complete game. Jessica Conover took the loss, allowing four earned runs on 11 hits with four strikeouts and no walks in a complete game effort.
