Two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning snapped a 9-9 tie and gave Edgewood an 11-9 win over the St. Lawrence baseball team on Wednesday afternoon in Fort Myers, Florida.
Rookie outfielder
Nicholas Butler went 3-for-6 at the plate for the Saints, while
Anthony Butler,
Andrew Circelli and
Jeremy Gerringer finished with two hits apiece.
Anthony Butler also finished with a team-best three RBI in the loss.
Starting pitcher
Andrew Matthews made his first collegiate appearance, throwing 3.0 innings and allowing seven runs on eight hits with three strikeouts.
Ryan Carson,
Anthony Ferraro and
Louis LaCivita pitched for the Saints in relief. Ferraro, who went 3.1 and allowed two runs on three hits with four strikeouts, was the pitcher of record and took the loss.
Edgewood outhit St. Lawrence 15-12 on Wednesday, and jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, moving around the bases with the help of two balks and a couple wild pitches while Matthews settled in in his first outing of the season.
The Saints responded, however, and cut the deficit to 4-3 in the top of second without recording a hit in the frame.
Four consecutive walks to start the inning brought the first run in to score and kept the bases loaded with no one out before Gerringer hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring in Circelli for the second run of the inning.
Jake Delaney scored the third on an RBI groundout to shortstop by
Matt Marowitz.
Edgewood tacked on five more runs through the next four innings and led 9-5 heading into the Saints' at-bats in the top of the sixth inning.
St. Lawrence scored four runs on four hits to tie the game at 9-9, including a one-out, two-run single to center by
Anthony Butler, followed by an RBI single to left center by Circelli.
But in the bottom of the eighth, Edgewood pulled in front for good with two runs on two hits and one error by the Saints to push to the final 11-9 margin.
The Saints had the potential tying runs on base in the top of the ninth after back-to-back walks were issued to
Brian Comerford and
Jeremy Gerringer, but left them stranded to end the game.
