An early third period goal for Dartmouth helped the Big Green to a 2-1 win over the St. Lawrence men's hockey team on Sunday evening in the decisive third game of their ECAC Hockey first-round playoff series in Hanover, New Hampshire, ending the Saints' season.
Â
Jacob Pritchard scored the lone goal of the night for St. Lawrence, with
Alex Gilmour assisting.
Arthur Brey finished with 31 saves, including 15 in the second period.
Â
Will Graber and Corey Kalk were the goal scorers for Dartmouth, with Graber notching the first of the game on a 5-on-3 power play at 6:33 in the second period.
Â
Matt Purmal and
Mike Marnell were sent to the penalty box 1:02 apart in the early goings of the middle frame, giving the Big Green 58 seconds with a two-man advantage. Graber needed just 11 of them before cashing in on a shot from the left circle that beat Brey just inside the near post to give Dartmouth the 1-0 lead.
Â
The Saints found the equalizer with time winding down in the frame after Gilmour created a turnover below the Dartmouth red line with an aggressive play on the forecheck. He fed a wide-open Pritchard in the slot for a one timer and his ninth of the season to tie the game at 1-1 heading into the second intermission.
Â
But just over two minutes into the final period, Corey Kalk put one after cutting to the middle on a rush into the zone for a 2-1 Dartmouth lead and the eventual game winner.
Â
The Saints outshot Dartmouth in the third period 10-8, but were unable to generate quality scoring chances with the extra attacker in the final minutes.
Â
Dartmouth finished with a 33-27 edge in total shots and went 1-3 on the power play. St. Lawrence was 0-2.
Â
With the loss, the Saints finish the season at 8-27-2. Dartmouth improves to 15-15-2 and advances to the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals to face No. 4 Harvard next weekend.
