The St. Lawrence University men's soccer team wrapped up the 2018 campaign 12-3-3 overall and 7-1-1 in conference play, capturing the Liberty League regular season and championship titles and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament for the Saints' 22nd tournament appearance.
Â
In the Liberty League semifinals,
Stephen Dorney sent a header to the back of the net off a set piece fromÂ
Jethro Dede to lift the Saints to a 3-2 double-overtime over the Hobart Statesmen. In the championship game Saints' goalkeeper
Mike Smith, who earned tournament MVP honors, made three incredible saves during penalty kicks allowing the Saints to claim the 2018 Liberty League Championship Title with a 1-1 double-overtime tie against Ithaca, advancing 3-1 in penalty kicks. The Scarlet and Brown received an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, but fell to Brockport, 2-1, in a first-round game on November 10.
Â
St. Lawrence kicked off the season with a tough non-conference schedule, finishing 3-1-1, with their only loss coming from 16th-ranked SUNY Cortland. The Saints opened league play with two wins over Union and Clarkson and won seven straight games from October 6-November 3, finishing with the semifinal win over Hobart.
Dede capped the Saints' season having earned USC All-America honors, USC First-Team All-East Region honors and his second consecutive Liberty League Player of the Year title. Dede was the first player to earn All-America honors for the Saints since Harry Copeland '16 received All-America honors in 2015.
Â
"While it was nice to win the Liberty League regular season title and the conference championships and go to the NCAA Tournament, I was most happy with the level of play that we reached this season," said head coach
Mike Toshack. "How we play and striving to play at a high level is what I feel is most important. As a team we are always striving to reach for perfection in everything we do which means we are constantly looking to improve in all areas. The entire team participated and contributed to our success this season. Unfortunately, people only get to see the games and not the battles and competitive level that takes place every day in training by all of our players, and without this it would be impossible to reach such a high level. The guys who play in games realize they have a responsibility to all their teammates to be at their best in terms of effort and focus."
Â
After a successful season, Toshack and his staff received their first Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year award. In the conference standings, the Saints finished with multiple players in the top-5 in three of the five categories.
Charlton Kelly ranked second with .444 goals per game and first with five game-winning goals on the season.
Â
The Saints will lose nine seniors and assistant coach Tim Lawlor to graduation, but with a large group of returners and newcomers, the Saints look ahead to the 2019 season and all that it will bring. This year's senior class wrapped up their St. Lawrence experience with two Liberty League regular season and championship titles (2015, 2018) and three trips to the NCAA tournament (2015, 2016, 2018).
Â
"This year's graduating class has been fantastic and will join the St. Lawrence Soccer Alumni Family having won two Liberty League regular-season championships, two Liberty League tournament championships and have made three NCAA Tournament appearances," Toshack continued. "I would especially like to recognize the outstanding leadership of our captains
Brendan McNamee,
Stephen Dorney,
Jethro Dede and
Sam Sapnar. The returning players and our recruiting class are working hard and eagerly anticipate the start of the 2019 campaign."
