Saints Unable to Overcome Early Deficit in Loss to Union

Andrew Murphy caught a seven-yard touchdown pass from Aaron Ruthman halfway through the fourth quarter, but it was the only score the St. Lawrence University offense would muster in a 29-7 loss to Union College on Saturday afternoon on Weeks Field at Leckonby Stadium.

Union took a 2-0 lead on a safety on a bad snap on the Saints' second play from scrimmage, Andre Ross Jr. scored on a five-yard touchdown pass from Will Bellamy, and Marcos Rodriguez hit a pair of 29-yard field goals to give the Dutchmen a 15-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Ross Jr. caught his second touchdown pass of the game with just one minute, eight seconds left in the first half, one play after Sebastian Lubrano returned an interception 19 yards to the 17-yard line.

Ruthman drove the Saints 78 yards on 13 plays to cut the lead to two scores halfway through the fourth quarter, completing 6-of-10 passes for 58 yards and gaining 13 yards on two rushing attempts on the drive.

Union, however, responded with its third touchdown of the game, with Derek Khnaizir capping seven-play, 45-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run.

Ruthman was 13-for-29 passing for 147 yards with one touchdown and one interception for the Saints. Tyler Grochot started the game at quarterback, completing 9-of-18 passes for 76 yards with one interception and one fumble.

Anthony Ferraro caught nine passes for 98 yards, and Murphy had four catches for 39 yards with the touchdown.
