Saints Open Season with Sweep in Florida

Taylor Armijo went 4-for-8 with a double, two RBI and three stolen bases, Elle Gray hit a grand slam and Hannah Sears threw a complete game shutout to lead the Saints to a sweep of Kalamazoo and the University of Minnesota Morris in their first two games of the season in Clearwater, Florida, on Saturday. 

Sears struck out five and allowed just four hits and two walks in seven innings of shutout softball in the opener, a 5-0 win over Kalamazoo. Armijo was 2-for-3 with an RBI double in the Saints' first game of the season. She also stole two bases, scoring a run on a steal home in the second inning.

In the second game of the day, an 11-4 win over Minnesota Morris, Gray broke the game open with a grand slam in a seven-run third inning to give the Saints an 8-0 lead. She finished the game 2-for-3 with 5 RBI, while Emma Reakes was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI. Angelina Carney was 2-for-3 with one RBI, Armijo was 2-for-4 with one RBI, and Deanna Sullivan was also 2-for-4.

Madison Mitchell threw a complete game for the victory, allowing two earned runs on five hits and four walks with seven strikeouts in her first collegiate start.

Madison Langrehr hit a three-run triple in the fifth inning to lead the Cougars.

The Saints, now 2-0, will face Minnesota Morris again tomorrow at 9 a.m., then play Thomas at 11:30 a.m.
