Saints Ride Hot Hitting to Two More Wins

Angelina Carney and Emma Reakes both hit home runs, and Madison Mitchell struck out 13 batters in a five-inning complete game shutout to lead the St. Lawrence University softball team to a pair of wins on Sunday afternoon during the team's spring break trip in Clermont, Florida.

Reakes hit a three-run shot in the fifth inning of a 17-8 rout of the University of Minnesota Morris in the Saints' first game of the day, while Carney's solo shot backed up Mitchell's outstanding performance in the circle in an 8-0 win over Thomas.

With the sweep, the Saints improved to 4-0 on the season, the best start for the Saints since the 2003 team won its first five games.

Alexandra Barter was 3-for-4 with three runs scored in the opener, while Mylea Mann went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs for the Saints. Elle Gray was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs, and Caitlin Syphurs was 2-for-2 with two walks, two RBI and two runs for St. Lawrence, which has scored 40 runs in their first four games. Last season, the Saints scored 39 runs in 11 games during their spring break trip. The 17 runs scored against Minnesota Morris are the most St. Lawrence has scored in a single game since a 24-0 victory over Wells in the 2001 season.

Bret Hulett went 2-for-3 with three RBI to lead the Cougars' offense. Meghan Pomeroy was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs, and Michelle O'Rourke was also 2-for-3 for Minnesota Morris, which fell to 2-13.

Caroline Young earned her first career win in the circle for the Saints, going 3.1 innings and allowing four earned runs. Allie Courtwright came on in relief and struck out three of the six batter she faced, allowing just one hit.

Mitchell, who had a win in her first collegiate start yesterday, was simply dominant against Thomas on Sunday, scattering three hits and two walks over five innings of work. She struck out 13 batters and had one ground out and one fly ball out.

Gray was 2-for-3 with two RBI against Thomas, giving the Saints a 3-0 lead with an RBI single in the third inning and an 8-0 lead with an RBI double in the fourth.

Courtney Vielleux went 2-for-3 to lead the Terriers, who fell to 0-2.

The Saints will face Colby in a pair of games on Monday.
