Saints Split Pair with Colby, Move to 5-1

The St. Lawrence University offense continued to roll on Monday, scoring 19 runs in a doubleheader split with Colby. After falling to the Mules 7-5 in the opener, the Saints responded with a 14-2 win in game two.

Caitlin Syphurs was 4-for-4 with a two-run home run, a walk and four RBI on the day, while Taylor Armijo went 4-for-7 from the leadoff spot with five runs scored and one RBI.

After Colby scored five unearned runs to take a 7-2 lead in the fourth inning of the first game, the Saints responded with two runs in the sixth on Syphurs' first career home run. Armijo led off the seventh with a single, then stole second and advanced to third on an error on the throw. She scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead to two, but the Saints were unable to complete the comeback.

St. Lawrence took control of the second game early, with Armijo scoring on a passed ball and Syphurs singling home a run for a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

The Saints scored four more runs in the second inning, as Elle Gray worked a bases loaded walk, Mylea Mann contributed a two-run single, and Emma Reakes added an RBI double. Deanna Sullivan added an RBI single in the third inning to push the lead to 7-0.

After Colby scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning, the Saints put the game away with seven runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Madison Mitchell recorded her third complete game of the season, striking out eight while allowing just four hits and three walks in the five-inning game.

Reakes was 3-for-7 on the day, while Sullivan was 2-for-5 with two RBI.

The 5-1 start is tied for the best record through six games in the team's 18-year history. The 2003 team was also 5-1 through six games.

"It's been a great experience so far," said head coach Elisa VanKirk. "We are just trying to get better each game, and we came back from a tough loss where we fought all the way. I'm super proud of all 16 players."

The Saints have Tuesday off, then return to action on Wednesday with afternoon contests against Washington and Jefferson and Thomas.
