Carson Gicewicz recorded the first multi-goal game of his career as the No. 16 St. Lawrence men's hockey team tied Canisius 3-3 on Friday night at the KeyBank Rink in the HarborCenter in Buffalo, N.Y.
Gicewicz - a native of nearby Orchard Park, N.Y. - scored two goals, including one on the power play, while
Nolan Gluchowski extended his point streak to five games with the first goal of the game. First-year
Alex Gilmour also recorded his first career point in his second game wearing the Scarlet and Brown.
The Saints had a 2-0 lead after the first period and a 3-1 lead early in the second, but Canisius battled back from two two-goal deficits to force overtime. St. Lawrence has played in five overtime games this season, with all five resulting in a tie. The Saints are now 10-6-5 on the year, while Canisius is 7-9-4 heading into tomorrow's rematch.
Friday's game featured seven posts; three for the Griffs and four for the Saints – including one from senior captain
Alexander Dahl in the overtime period. The Saints also had an overturned goal, as
Ryan Garvey appeared to win it for St. Lawrence midway through the overtime, but after review officials ruled he had kicked the puck into the open net behind Canisius netminder Daniel Urbani.
The Saints got on the board first with Gluchowski's third goal of the season after Dahl and fellow senior
Woody Hudson worked to set the Wixom, Mich. native up for a slapshot from just inside the right point just over two minutes into the game.
At the 7:34 mark of the opening frame, Gicewicz netted his first of the night with a shot from the bottom of the left circle, with junior
Ryan Lough assisting on the play.
Eight seconds into the second period Canisius cut the Saints' lead in half when David Parrottino capitalized on a turnover off the opening draw and beat
Kyle Hayton with a low shot to make it 2-1.
Later in the frame, with the Saints on their first power play of the night, a trio of first-years helped St. Lawrence regain a two-goal lead.
Ben Finkelstein passed the puck off to Gilmour who carried behind the net and took a quick shot short side that was saved by Urbani, but the rebound kicked high in front of the crease and Gicewicz was there to knock it out of the air and into the back of the net for the first power play goal of his career and second goal of the night.
But it didn't take long for the Griffs to pull back within one, as Ryan Schmelzer buried a quick wrist shot 22 seconds later at the 9:16 mark to make it 3-2. Jesse Pereira tied the game at 16:04 of the second period when he tucked a shot from the goal line under the outstretched pads of Hayton.
The Saints netminder came up big late in the third period when he made a save with his right shoulder on a Jeff Murray wrist shot off an odd-man rush by the Griffs. The shot hit Hayton's shoulder, rang the crossbar and then popped up into the netting to stop play. He also made three saves in overtime.
He finished with 27 saves for St. Lawrence, while Urbani had 26 stops – including five in overtime – for Canisius
The Saints and Griffs will play at the HarborCenter again on Saturday night, with puck drop scheduled for 7:35.
