After trailing by just a single goal at 4-3 at halftime, the St. Lawrence University Women's Lacrosse team surrendered eight second-half goals and the Saints dropped a 12-5 decision to William Smith Saturday afternoon on Boswell Field in Geneva.
For the game, five different St. Lawrence (6-6 overall, 2-2 Liberty League) players netted goals.
William Smith (4-6, 3-1) scored the first two goals of the game to take a quick lead before Julia Mitiguy started things off for the St. Lawrence offense and Hayden Stein added a goal five minutes later to knot the score at 2-2.
The Herons answered with a pair of goals within a span of a minute to jump ahead 4-2 before Kara Hurley scored near the end of the half to pull the Saints to within a goal at 4-3.
In the second half, William Smith scored three times in the first five minutes of the period and pulled ahead 8-3 at the 18:33 mark with its second man-down goal of the day.
Kiera Taussig scored less than 30 seconds later with a man-up goal to cut the lead to 8-4 but the Herons responded with four straight goals for a 12-4 advantage.
Kayla Schmalz rounded out the scoring for the Saints at the 2:03 mark.
Mitiguy and Stein led the Saints with two points each while Taussig finished with a goal, two ground balls, a caused turnover and a draw control for St. Lawrence. Schmalz and Emma Garfield led the Saints with three ground balls each, Garfield and Tayler Kent each had a pair of caused turnovers while Mitiguy and Schmalz each had two draw controls.
Olga Lukas and Cricket Wemyss combined for seven saves in the St. Lawrence goal.
The Saints return home next weekend for games against Vassar (Friday) and Bard (Saturday). The seven St. Lawrence seniors will be recognized prior to the start of the Bard game.
