Kiera Taussig and Caroline Bailey scored two goals each for the St. Lawrence University Women's Lacrosse team but an early deficit and trouble clearing the ball led to a 15-7 loss to Ithaca College Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game at Ithaca.
Ithaca (1-0), listed in the also receiving votes section of the latest national poll, scored four early goals before Bailey scored on a free position shot just under five minutes into the game to get the Saints (1-1) on the scoreboard.
The Bombers answered with six straight goals to take a 10-1 lead before Kara Hurley scored for the Saints on another free position shot with 3:47 left to play in the opening half.
Neither team was able to score in the final minutes of the period and Ithaca took a 10-2 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Ithaca scored the first two goals on the period to forge ahead 12-2.
Jacqueline Sovie, Taussig and Julia Mitiguy scored consecutive goals to get St. Lawrence back in the game and cutting the lead to 12-5.
After the Bombers scored to make it a 13-5 game, Taussig and Bailey each scored their second goals of the game in the final seven minutes of the contest to trim the lead down to 13-7. Ithaca scored twice in the last three minutes of play for the final score.
Bailey led the St. Lawrence scorers with two goals and an assist for three points while Taussig had a pair of goals while Hurley, Sovie and Mitiguy each scored once. Abigail Owens had an assist for the Saints.
Cricket Wemyss played the entire game in the St. Lawrence goal and finished with 14 saves including eight in the second half.
St. Lawrence had just six of 13 successful clears in the first half but rebounded to clear 10 of 13 attempts in the second half.
The Saints return to action March 18 at SUNY Brockport before heading to Florida for three games against Birmingham-Southern, SUNY Fredonia and Allegheny College.
