Women’s Lacrosse Drops Road Game to Nationally Ranked Brockport

Abigail Owens scored three times including twice in the first seven minutes of the game to lead St. Lawrence University Women's Lacrosse team but host SUNY Brockport scored 13 goals in streaks of six and seven goals each to defeat the Saints 16-5 in a non-conference matchup Friday on Bob Boozer Field at Eunice Kennedy Shriver Stadium in Brockport.

After Brockport (5-0), ranked No. 19 in the latest national poll, scored to open the game, Owens scored a pair of goals in a span of 58 seconds to give the Saints (1-2) a 2-1 lead. The first Owens goal was unassisted and the second came off a pass from Julia Mitiguy.

The Golden Eagles responded with six straight goals over the next 15 minutes of action before Chloe Knapp stopped the streak with a goal at the 3:58 mark of the first half with an assist from Hayden Stein.

Brockport added two more goals before the end of the first half and took a 9-3 lead into the break.

In the second half, Brockport continued its run with five more goals to start the period and forged ahead 14-3 before Kayla Schmalz scored to stop the run with 9:24 left to play.

The teams traded goals in the closing minutes with Owens netting her third of the game with 4:17 left on the clock.

The draw controls were an even 11-11 for the game but Brockport held a 29-19 advantage in shots and a 21-12 edge in shots on goal.

Cricket Wemyss played most of the first half and finished with two saves and Olga Lukas played the final 32:45 and also finished with three saves.

The Saints return to action in Florida Sunday with the first of three games in the Sunshine State and a 6 pm contest Sunday against Birmingham Southern. St. Lawrence will also face SUNY Fredonia Tuesday and Allegheny College Wednesday. All three games will be played at GT Bray Park in Bradenton, Florida.
