Balanced Attack Leads Women’s Lacrosse in Season Opener

Kiera Taussig scored three goals in the first 16 minutes while Julia Mitiguy and Ashley Norris each finished with two goals and two assists leading the St. Lawrence University Women's Lacrosse team to a convincing 16-6 victory over Johnson & Wales Friday afternoon at the Adirondack Sports Dome in Queensbury, NY.

The Saints (1-0) fell behind as Johnson & Wales (0-1) scored on its first possession 2:19 into the game.

Taussig scored the equalizer 1:04 later and St. Lawrence scored another 11 goals before the Wildcats finally scored again at the 4:28 mark of the first half. The teams traded goals over the final few minutes of the first half and the Saints took a 13-3 lead into the break.

Taussig scored three of the first eight goals for the Saints while Mitiguy scored two and Norris, Kara Hurley, Jacqueline Sovie, Abigail Owens, Greta Massey and Chloe Knapp all added single goals in the run to give St. Lawrence a 12-1 advantage.

"It was great to get off to a quick start to the game and a good start to the season," said Head Coach Ashley Pike. "We saw some good scoring from several different players but the scoring also allowed us to see what everyone could do in game situations."

Allie Cornell-Roberts scored near the end of the first half while Knapp, Owens and Norris all added their second goals of the game in the second half to close out the scoring.

With the comfortable lead, the Saints substituted freely in the second half allowing every available player to see action in the season opener.

The Saints won 12 of the 16 draws in the first half and finished with a 14-9 advantage in draw controls and an 8-1 edge in free position shots.

Norris and Mitiguy led the Saints with four points each with two goals and two assists each. Taussig, Hurley and Owens had three points each as Hurley and Owens each had two goals and an assist.

Knapp, who played against her sister Lydia Knapp for the first time in her career, had two points with her two goals and Hayden Stein added two points for the Saints on a pair of assists. Lydia Knapp led Johnson & Wales with two goals and an assist.

Massey, Cornell-Roberts and Sovie had one point each with single goals and Caroline Bailey added a point with an assist.

Cricket Wemyss played the first half in goal making one save and Olga Lukas played the second half and made four saves for St. Lawrence.
