Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Northeastern Completes Weekend Sweep 4-2

Jan. 9: Sophomore wing Nolan Stevens and junior defenseman Matt Benning scored two goals each as Northeastern University completed a sweep of 13th ranked St. Lawrence University in Division I men's ice hockey with a 4-2 win at the Saints' Appleton Arena Saturday night.

Northeastern, now 4-1-2 in its last seven after a 1-11-2 start to the season ran its unbeaten streak to four games with the Saturday win, while the Saints have now dropped three of their last four and are 10-7-2 heading into a Tuesday game at arch-rival Clarkson. While the Saints were sharper in Saturday's game than Friday's 3-0 loss to the Huskies, they still had trouble finishing their scoring  chances, something they hope to fix with a trio of tough ECAC matches coming up this week. They follow the Clarkson game with games at Harvard and Dartmouth on the weekend.

Northeastern scored a pair of power play goals to help pave the way for the win and received another solid goaltending performance from freshman Ryan Ruck, who made 27 saves for his second straight win.

"There's a couple things," coach Greg Carvel said. "Discipline was huge, we took too many penalties against a good skilled team which has a good power play. They scored a couple power-play goals and that was a big difference."

"We got a lot of pucks around the net, we just couldn't bang one in," Carvel said. "They're a pretty a good team and they played well, we just couldn't get that ugly goal."

"I really liked the way we played in the third, although we were down two goals, we scored that second goal and I thought we were coming and we had chances," Carvel said. "We lost Gluchowski for the third period, so we were short on the back end and our defensemen were pretty tired by then."

The Huskies opened the scoring just six seconds into their first power play chance of the game as Stevens scored his eighth of the season on a backhand following the faceoff in the Saint zone. He cut to the net and backhanded a shot past Saint freshman goalie Art Brey and inside the near post at 7:40. The Saints came back to tie it on a five-on-three power play chance as senior Brian Ward scored his sixth of the season, taking a pass from Drew Smolcynski and scoring with just 1.3 seconds left in the first period.

Northeastern regained the lead with the game's first even strength goal as Benning scored on a shot along the ice with 1:13 to go in the second period for his third goal of the year and Benning converted on a major power play 2:37 into the second period to give the Huskies a 3-1 lead.

Saint junior defenseman Ben Masella scored his first goal of the year on a shot from the point which beat Ruck through traffic at 10:20 of the third period to cut the lead to 3-2, but while the Saints had some chances on a late power play, they couldn't find the equalizer and Stevens iced the win with his second of the night from point blank range with 1:39 to play in regulation.

Brey finished with 29 saves for the Saints in his first home start as Northeastern finished with a 33-29 edge in shots on goal with 12 of the shots coming on power play opportunities.
