Jan. 12: St. Lawrence University sophomore goaltender
Kyle Hayton was spectacular on Tuesday night, but the rest of the Saints had a tough night as Clarkson snapped a 1-1 tie 6:48 into the third period and tacked on an empty net goal for a 3-1 win over the Saints at Cheel Arena.
Â
It was the third straight loss and fourth in the last five games for the Saints, who have scored just three goals in the three losses while Clarkson won its first ECAC game of the year and improved to 7-1-1 at home. The Knights are now 9-9-2 overall and 1-5-2 in the ECAC while the Saints fall to 10-8-2, 4-3-1 in the league and are facing a tough road trip at Harvard and Dartmouth Friday and Saturday.
Â
While Clarkson built an early advantage in shots on goal, Hayton and the Saint defense kept them at bay and the Saints started to establish some offense with a big flurry with 5:30 left in the opening period. Clarkson defenseman Paul Geiger kept it a scoreless game when he made a diving block on a shot by
Christian Horn with an empty net and  Clarkson goalie Greg Lewis had three saves in the flurry.
Â
The Saints scored the game's first goal as a Clarkson power play expired in the final minute.
Ryan Lough and
Tommy Thompson headed up ice on a two on one, and Lough held near the top of the right circle and sent a pass across to Thompson who redirected it into the empty side of the net as Lewis was caught at the post at 19:42.1.
Â
"I guess you can say we had some chances to score tonight, but they had a lot more chances and Hayton was really good," said Saint coach
Greg Carvel. "We looked like a very tired team and one that was uninspired. It was a very poor effort on our part and it is hard to imagine why in a game against your biggest rival."
Â
"Give them credit, they came out and played with a lot more intensity than we did…we couldn't match it and we didn't use parts of our game that we needed to," Carvel concluded.
Â
Clarkson tied the score 2:16 into the second period as Sam Vigneault scored his seventh of the year when the puck bounced off the end boards and right to him in the short slot, but Hayton kept it an even game with a spectacular second period performance.
Â
The Saint sophomore made 19 saves in the second period including a number of big saves on 1:37 of Clarkson five-on-three power play. He finished the night with 35 saves while Lewis made 26 saves for the Knights.
Â
Vigneault scored his second of the night to win it at 6:48 of the third as he picked up a rebound just outside the crease and poked it back to the far corner after Hayton got a glove on the initial shot, but couldn't cover it up. The Knights scored an empty net goal with 54 seconds left as defenseman Paul Geiger scored his third of the year to wrap it up.
