Feb. 27: A pair of third period goals helped Cornell to a 3-1 win over the No. 10 St. Lawrence women's hockey team in the first game of the best-of-three ECAC quarterfinal series at Lynah Rink in Ithaca. With the loss, the Saints drop to 19-11-5 overall while Cornell improves to 17-10-3 this season.

"We battled hard all night in an up-and-down game," Head Coach Chris Wells said. "We had plenty of chances to score, including three breakaways that Voorheis was able to deny us when the game was 0-0. Cornell has plenty of chances too, but we blocked some shots and Carmen made some good stops."

In a back-and-forth first period, the Saints snuck in behind the Cornell defense on three occasions, including a pair of breakaway opportunities first for Jacqueline Wand and then again for Hannah Miller. Wand's backhand attempt missed wide and sophomore netminder Paula Voorheis got a piece of Hannah Miller's shot with her right shoulder to keep things scoreless.

Cornell scored the lone goal of the second on a bomb from Cassandra Poudrier on the point with Morgan Richardson and Kaitlin Doering assisting to carry a 1-0 lead in the third.

The Saints got a goal from sophomore Brooke Webster early in the final frame to tie the game at 1-1, but the Big Red's Jess Brown buried a rebound at the 8:52 mark to give her team the lead for good.  Jillian Saulnier added an empty net goal with 15 seconds remaining to ice it for the Big Red.

Webster's goal started with a great play by senior Jacqueline Wand at the Saints defensive blue line to create a turnover and spring the Aurora, Ont. native and linemate Kennedy Marchment for a two-on-one rush the other way. Webster carried into the Cornell zone and snapped off a wrister from the top of left circle that beat Voorheis top shelf for her 17^th of the season.

MacDonald made 30 saves in the loss, as Cornell finished with a 33-19 edge in shots over the Saints.

"I don't feel like I did a good job preparing the team for the first game of this series, but we have a very resilient team and look forward to tomorrow's game," Wells added.

The Saints and Big Red will square off again tomorrow at 4 p.m. in a must-win game for the Scarlet and Brown.
