Thoroughbreds Rally in Second Half, Top Saints 76-71

Feb. 10: The St. Lawrence University men's basketball team went into halftime leading Skidmore College 42-29 on Tuesday night in Saratoga Springs, NY.  However, the Thoroughbreds rallied with a big run in the second half to earn a 76-71 Liberty League victory.

Skidmore improved to 13-7 overall and 10-2 in conference thanks to 19-point efforts from Connor Merrill and Royce Paris while Aldin Medunjanin added 18 points and eight rebounds.  St. Lawrence (13-10, 7-7) was led by Kyle Kobis, who also had 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting including a 5-of-6 mark from behind the arc.  Willie Zachery added 18 points and Kyle Edwards had 15, but the visitors were plagued by 17 personal fouls in the second half allowing Skidmore to escape with the win.

St. Lawrence had a great first half, opening up a 13-point halftime cushion behind Kobis and Edwards.  The duo each had 14 points as the visitors shot nearly 60% from the field.  Though Paris had nine points for Skidmore, the home team was only 2-for-10 from three and had eight turnovers leading to the 42-29 deficit.

The Saints continued to thrive early in the second half, as a lay-up by Brady Condlin with 14:43 to play gave the Saints its largest lead of 18 at 55-37.  However, Skidmore would respond with a game-saving run, outscoring the visitors 30-5 in an 11:00 minute stretch, giving the Thoroughbreds a 67-60 lead with 3:09 left in regulation.  St. Lawrence would get within three points with 1:17 to play, but Skidmore was efficient down the stretch with back-to-back baskets followed by four makes at the free throw line to lock up the 76-71 conference win.

Both teams shot 44% from the field in the game, though Skidmore benefitted at the free throw line in the second half where they outscored the Saints 18-5.
St. Lawrence will be in action again next Wednesday, February 18 at 8pm when the Saints head to Potsdam, NY to take on Clarkson University.
