Feb. 18: The St. Lawrence University men's basketball team battled back from a nine point deficit in the second half to take the lead late against Clarkson University in Potsdam, NY on Wednesday night. However, the Golden Knights came up with two clutch three pointers in the final minutes, allowing them to hang on for a tight 68-62 Liberty League win.
The Saints (13-11, 7-8) were led by captain
Brady Condlin's 21 points and eight rebounds, while
Willie Zachery chipped in 15 points. Despite the loss, the Scarlet and Brown remain in control of their own destiny, as a win against Skidmore on Friday will still clinch the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament thanks to a Hobart win over RIT on Wednesday in Geneva, NY. Clarkson, which was led by John Coleman's 21 points, remains in the hunt for the No. 1 seed after improving to 19-5 (12-3).
St. Lawrence struggled from the field in the first half, shooting just 32% from the floor and 2-of-9 from behind the arc. Condlin kept his team in contention with an 11-point half, but Coleman and the Knights shot 60% from the floor and 12-of-13 from the free throw line to take a 38-29 lead into intermission.
The Saints began to chip away at the deficit early in the second half and clawed to within two points on a three by Zachery. A lay-up by Condlin tied the score at 47-47 midway through the half, and a jumper by
Kyle Edwards gave the visitors their first lead since it was 4-2 with 9:40 to play. Though Zachery gave the Saints their largest lead of four at 57-53, but Clarkson rattled off a 7-0 run capped by a big three by Charles McAllister to reclaim the lead, 60-57 with 2:21 to go.
After Condlin free throws cut the lead to one, Clarkson turned to Drew Zlogar who took a pass from McAllister and buried a crucial three to stretch the lead back to four, 63-59, with 1:34 to play. Not to be outdone,
Kaleb Faison drilled a three for St. Lawrence with 28 seconds left to cut the lead to one, 63-62.
Coleman made two free throws to reestablish a three-point cushion, and as St. Lawrence looked to find an open look on the ensuing possession, McAllister was able to tie up the ball just long enough for the officials to call a jump ball and give the possession to Clarkson with just 12 seconds left. The Knights would add free throws from that point to seal the 68-62 win.
St. Lawrence turned the ball over just six times in the loss, but was just 5-of-20 from three. Clarkson, which was outrebounded in the game 33-31, got 14 points from Felix Abongo and 13 off the bench from Zlogar.
The Saints will host Skidmore College on Friday, February 20 on "Senior Night" in the Burkman Gymnasium at 8:00pm with a playoff spot on the line. Clarkson will then head to Saratoga Springs, NY to take on the Thoroughbreds on Sunday, February 22 to close out the regular season.
