Jan. 6: The St. Lawrence women's hockey team had No. 2 Minnesota in their sights well into the third period, but the Gophers were able to score three goals in the final eight minutes to secure a 5-1 victory over the Saints at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis.
The Gophers outshot the St. Lawrence 43-22 on Tuesday night, scoring a goal in both the first and second periods to head into the final frame with a 2-0 lead.
Just 2:45 into the third, sophomore
Brooke Webster scored her team-leading 12
th goal of the season to cut the lead in half and spark the St. Lawrence offense, but Minnesota netminder Amanda Leveille closed the door.
"That was a great game to be a part of," Head Coach
Chris Wells said. "We had some super opportunities to tie it at 2-2 and that would have been really fun. In the end, Minnesota was able to capitalize on some nice efforts to finish the game off."
The Gophers regained their two-goal lead at the 12:01 mark and would make it 4-1 just 50 seconds later on a Rachel Bona goal. Bona then added an empty net tally with just under three minutes to play to give Minnesota its eventual 5-1 margin.
First-year
Brooke Wolejko finished with a career-high 38 saves in the loss for St. Lawrence.
In addition, the Saints finished a perfect six-for-six on the penalty kill against the top-ranked power-play unit in the country.
"It was a productive series for us against them," Wells added. "Minnesota works very hard in all areas and comes at the game fast and clean."
St. Lawrence is now 9-8-2 overall heading into an ECAC road weekend with games at Cornell and Colgate on Friday and Saturday, respectively. The Gophers improved to 18-1-2.Â
