Jan. 9: The St. Lawrence women's hockey team got three goals from veteran forwards, while No. 10 Cornell racked up a trio of goals on special teams in a 3-3 tie at Lynah Rink on Friday night to open the second semester conference schedule. The Saints are now 9-8-3 overall and 5-3-2 in the ECAC, while the Big Red pull to 6-6-2 and 5-2-1.
"That was a very gutsy effort by our team tonight," Head Coach
Chris Wells. "We played our best as the game went on and had some great chances to win it in overtime. It is always such an entertaining game versus Cornell."
Senior
Jacqueline Wand put the Saints out in front 1-0 with her third of the year at the 13:00 minute mark of the opening period. The play started when
Brooke Webster played the puck to senior captain
Amanda Boulier who was cutting through the slot. Boulier drew a pair of defenders and dropped a pass to Wand, who was left alone on the far post, for the easy finish.
Cornell pulled even just one minute and 18 seconds later with a power-play tally from Brianne Jenner on a one timer from the left faceoff dot that sailed over the shoulder of first-year goaltender
Brooke Wolejko, who was making her fourth straight start for the Saints.
Each team scored two goals in the second, with the Saints opening up a 3-1 lead on goals by
Kailee Heidersbach and
Ellie Williams before the Big Red answered with a pair of special teams' tallies.
Just over a minute into the second period Boulier threw the puck out in front of the net from the end boards to a crashing Heidersbach who pushed it under the pads of Cornell netminder Paula Voorheis to give the Saints a 2-1 lead. Â
Then, at the 2:11 mark, Williams increased the Saints lead to 3-1 with her first goal of the season. The senior carried the puck through the neutral zone and in between a pair of Big Red defenders before getting a shot off on Voorheis. Voorheis made the initial stop, but the Pryor, Okla. native collected her own rebound and stuffed the puck short side for the goal.
For Cornell, Jenner added her second power-play goal of the game at the 10:11 mark and Hannah Bunton scored shorthanded just under six minutes later to knot the game at three.
"Jenner is such a fabulous player and works so hard in all areas," Wells added. "We tried to put two players on her and she still managed to have a pile of chances to win it."
Despite being outshot 36-23 in the contest, St. Lawrence held the Big Red to just two shots in the third period and four in the overtime; with Cornell on the power play for most of the extra session.
"Killing almost three minutes in overtime was a huge boost," Wells added. "All in all it's a very good point in the standings."
The Saints entered the night one point ahead of the Big Red in the ECAC standings and maintain their lead with the tie. They sit in fifth place heading into Saturday's game at Colgate, with just four points separating the third and sixth-place teams.
Wolejko finished with 33 saves for the Saints and is now 2-2-1 on the season. Voorheis made 20 stops for the Big Red.
Puck drop for tomorrow's matchup with the Raiders is set for 4 p.m. at Starr Rink in Hamilton.Â
