Box Score Sept. 6 : Junior
Emily DePoy score twice as the St. Lawrence women's soccer team downed Westfield State 6-2 in the consolation game of the Springfield College Invitation on Saturday night. It is the first time the Saints, now 3-1 on the season, have scored six goals since September 2012.
"This was a much better performance from yesterday," Head Coach
Franco Bari said. "We discussed the importance of coming out hard and we did just that."
DePoy and the Saints wasted very little time getting on the scoreboard Saturday, as the sophomore buried her first goal of the day in the 2
nd minute off a corner kick by senior captain
Holly Wark.
Two straight goals by Westfield State's Ashleigh Chretien and Amanda Grant put the Saints in a 2-1 hole in the 26
th minute, but they would respond with two goals of their own to finish the half and retake a 3-2 lead.
First-year student
Kaleigh White scored in the 29
th minute off a pass by
Amanda Hamilton, and junior
Mimi Coppinger tallied the eventual game-winning goal in the 37
th minute with an assist going to
Caroline Crandall.
The Saints came out strong again in the second half with goals by
Nyssa LaClair and first-year
Katie Stames to increase the lead to 5-2, before DePoy added her second of the day on a penalty kick at the 66 minute mark to finish the scoring. The game was called with just over 17 minutes remaining due to lightning.
"While we still need to work on our defensive unit," Bari said, "I was pleased with how organized we were today."
The Saints outshot Westfield State 17-7 and put 13 shots on net in the contest. Goalkeeper
Kelsey West made three saves, while Anne Stack finished with seven stops for the Owls.
