Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

No. 7/8 Clarkson Scores Late, Edges Saints 2-1

Oct. 4: A late third-period penalty proved costly for the Saints on Saturday, as Clarkson's Erin Ambrose netted a power-play goal with 1:16 remaining in regulation to snap a 1-1 tie and carry the No. 7/8 Golden Knights to a 2-1 victory at Cheel Arena in Potsdam.

"Another exciting game;" Head Coach Chris Wells said, "two evenly-matched teams giving everything they have in front of a great crowd."

It was a physical battle between the rivals; the story line similar to that of Friday night's matchup at Appleton Arena. But on Saturday, Clarkson flipped the script, as it was the Knights who scored first, gave up the lead and then broke through in dramatic fashion with time winding down to lock up a win.

With just over two minutes to play junior defensemen Megan Armstrong was whistled for body checking, opening the door for Ambrose and the Knights to make one last push with the man advantage.  The defensemen beat Saints netminder Carmen MacDonald with Clarkson's 30th shot of the game, with assists going to Cayley Mercer and Shannah MacAulay.

Clarkson's Amanda Titus put the Golden Knights on top 1-0 midway through the first period with Mercer and Danielle Matteuci assisting on the play.

Despite being outshot 15-5 in the middle frame, the Saints managed to put one behind Clarkson's Shea Tiley and pull even at 1-1 as sophomore Brooke Webster tallied her third of the young season at the 18:45 mark. Amanda Boulier, who set up Webster's first goal on Friday night, factored into the Saints lone goal on Saturday as well, picking up the assist.

MacDonald finished with 28 saves for the Saints, while Tiley made 20 stops for the Golden Knights for her first collegiate victory.

In addition to the excitement of the game itself, Saturday feature a banner-raising ceremony for the 2013-14 national championship team.

"Clarkson put on a fantastic event today, not only for their program, but for the North Country and women's hockey. We were happy to be a part of it."

After splitting the home-and-home series, each team carries a 1-1-0 record into non-conference action next weekend, when the Saints will play host to No. 3 Boston College.
