Saints Defeat Golden Knights 1-0 on "Senior Day"

Box Score Nov. 2:  The St. Lawrence University women's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory in its season finale against Clarkson University (5-12-0, 3-5-0) on Saturday at Sandy MacAllaster Field.

The Saints, who improve to 9-4-3 overall, honored their five seniors, Liz Laprade, Julia Friesen, Andrea Strauss, Corinne Werner and Erika Gobeille in their final home match of their four-year careers.  Gobeille was the lone goal scorer for the Saints, while Strauss earned her fourth shutout of the season.

"I thought we played very well in the first half and it was only fitting that Erika scored on senior day," said St. Lawrence head coach Franco Bari.  "While the second half was much more even, the backs did what they needed to do and Andrea came up with a really big save to preserve the shutout. I was very pleased with the support of the team towards the senior class. It was a great result on a great day".

St. Lawrence was in control for much of the opening half, getting the game-winning goal from Gobeille in the 14th minute. On a free kick, Holly Wark floated a perfect cross into the far side of the box to Hannah Calvelli, who hit a hard shot towards the goal.  Clarkson's goalkeeper Kim Kenline was able to deflect the shot, but Gobeille was near the post to put back the rebound for her third goal of the season.

Clarkson had a chance in the 20th minute when Megan Strijek had a breakaway down the middle of the field.  Her shot from the top of the box went wide of the goal.

In the second half, Clarkson came out with more energy and had much more possession on the Saints' defensive end than in the opener.  They had another solid opportunity to tie the game as Anna Demasi sent a cross over the St. Lawrence defense to Strijek, who hit a hard shot on net.  Saints' goalkeeper Andrea Strauss made an excellent diving save to preserve the shutout.

St. Lawrence nearly added to its lead in the 57th minute as Gobeille hit a cross to teammate Mackenzie Collins making a run at the far post.  Collins one-touched a shot towards the right post, but Kenline made an impressive diving save to deny the bid.

In the 71st minute, Anna Demasi had a shot that was much more dangerous than it appeared that nearly knotted the game up.  Off a corner kick, Nikki Carfi found Demasi at the top of the box.  Demasi hit a floater towards the back of the goal, but it hit the crossbar and knocked out of bounds.

St. Lawrence held advantages in shots (12-8) and corners (5-3) in the contest.  Straus improved to 4-1-1 on the season, making three saves for her fourth shutout.  Meanwhile, Kenline put in a five save performance, but would suffer the loss to fall to 3-9-0.
