The Saints' offense was humming early and often as the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team raced to a 6-0 win over SUNY Potsdam on Tuesday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field.
St. Lawrence improved to 1-1-1 with the win, while the Bears fell to 1-2-1.
"It was a great performance with contributions from every member of the team," said head coach
Dima Kaliakin. "It was great to be back on Sandy with awesome supporters that helped create a great environment."
The first goal of the contest came in just the second minute as
Zoe Rogan controlled the ball in the midfield and fired a long ball forward to a streaking
Barrett Freeman. She outran the SUNY Potsdam defense and touched a shot past the goalkeeper to take the early 1-0 lead.
Rogan was on the other end of the ledger for the second goal, which came in the 15
th minute. Defender
Gwyn McGee threw a pass to
Chloe Bourque on the right wing, where she fired a long cross into the box. Rogan was on the receiving end and redirected the ball in for the 2-0 lead.
The game went to 3-0 four minutes later when once again Bourque centered a ball in the Bears' end.
Kiki D'Anza took the pass, made a move around a defender, and kissed a strike off the left post and in.
Next up on the scoresheet was
Maddie Needham, who finished off a great passing play in the 30
th minute.
Madeline Johnson and her classmate
Charlotte Manganello made some great passes as they charged through the heart of the Potsdam defense. The ball eventually fell to Needham, who made it a 4-0 game. The assists were the first in the collegiate careers of Johnson and Manganello.
The last goal of the first half came in the 43
rd minute as Johnson scored after assisting on the previous goal.
Aver Asom was in the midfield, where she fired a pass up the wing to
Paige McLaughlin. The junior found Johnson, who finished for her first collegiate goal to make the match 5-0 at the break.
The game settled in for the second half and the teams combined for just one more goal the rest of the way.
In the 61
st minute, Freeman was on the right wing and laced a pass up to Rogan, who was outside the box. The senior rifled a long-range strike over the Potsdam goalkeeper to make it a 6-0 game.
Rogan led the way with two goals, an assist, and five points, while D'Anza and Freeman had a goal and an assist each in the effort.
In the woodwork,
Zoe Davenport got the clean sheet after stopping both shots she faced. Caroline Vines stopped six shots in Potsdam's net in 67:49 of action, while Kalissa Young came in for the last 22:11 and didn't face a shot.
The Scarlet and Brown held the heavy 34-2 edge in shot attempts and led 12-2 in shots on frame. St. Lawrence also had seven corner kicks to the Bears' none.
The Saints will look to carry their momentum into the weekend, when they will host Plattsburgh State on Saturday, September 12, at Sandy MacAllaster Field in a 3 p.m. start. Â
