Barrett Freeman scored her second goal of the season for the Saints in the second half, but a quick response from the visiting team led the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team to a 1-1 tie against Plattsburgh State on Saturday evening on Sandy MacAllaster Field.
St. Lawrence moved to 1-1-2 on the year, while the Cardinals went to 2-1-2.
Freeman was in attack mode from the get-go in the match and nearly broke the score in the opening moments. In the 5
th minute, the forward had a break on the Cardinals' defenders and got a shot off on goal that rang off the crossbar.
Sydney Keenan, Freeman, and
Maddie Needham generated some more looks in the opening 13 minutes but couldn't solve Desiree DuBois.
Reagan Murphy was equally solid in the Saints' woodwork as she made four saves in the first half of the contest.
After a scoreless first 45 minutes, the game saw two goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half.
In the 50
th minute,
Kiki D'Anza collected the ball and was dancing around the Plattsburgh defense to the right side of the box. The senior centered a ball to Freeman, who buried a strike to give the Saints the 1-0 lead.
Less than five minutes later, the Cardinals' Ireland McGowan got a pass from Addison Shultis and took a long-range shot from outside the box that floated up and above the outstretched hand of Murphy to tie the game at 1-1.
Zoe Rogan,
Madeline Johnson, and Needham all had chances to take the lead after the equalizer, but Dubois made all three saves, while Murphy stopped the lone shot she faced the rest of the way as the game went to a 1-1 final.
Murphy finished with five saves in the match, while DuBois had six in the visiting goal.
St. Lawrence led the Cardinals 15-13 in shot attempts, 7-6 in shots on goal, and 8-2 in corner kicks.
The Saints will be back on the pitch on Wednesday, September 16, when the team heads to Oneonta, N.Y. for a 6 p.m. match against Hartwick College. Â
