After an early goal from the home team,
Kelsey Ackerman scored her first career goal in the waning minutes of the first half to tie the match as the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw against Nazareth on Saturday afternoon at Golden Flyer Stadium in Rochester, N.Y.
The Saints moved to 0-1-1 with the draw, while Nazareth went to 1-0-1.
It was the home side that broke the scoring in the contest as the Golden Flyers got a fifth-minute goal from Lillian Fejko, who was assisted on the play by Giuliana Rodriguez.
After a
Sofia Manne chance sailed high of the goal,
Zoe Davenport kept the game at 1-0 with a save moments later from Rodriguez.
The Scarlet and Brown were hunting an equalizer and got chances from
Kiki D'Anza and
Chloe Bourque as the half continued. D'Anza's chance missed the net, while Bourque was stopped by goalkeeper Katriana Walls.
Davenport once again had to make a save to keep the game at 1-0, stopping Morgan Szeflinski in the 43
rd minute, and the Saints turned it around to tie the game on the other end. The senior keeper fed a pass up the right wing to
Gwyn McGee, who fired a pass up the sideline to Ackerman. The first-year fired a long-range shot over the outstretched arms of Walls for her first collegiate goal and the 1-1 score.
The two teams traded chances in the second half as the Saints put three shots on goal that were stopped, while Davenport stopped both bids that came her way in 45 minutes.
Nazareth had a chance late in the contest as a corner kick in the 86
th minute led to a chance from Carolina Lott-Diamond, whose shot missed out right and the clock hit 90 on the draw.
Davenport made a career-high eight saves in the effort, while Walls came up with four in the home goal.
Nazareth had a 15-9 edge in shots attempts and a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal.
The Scarlet and Brown will head back to Canton and will play their home opener on Tuesday, September 8 at 4 p.m. against SUNY Potsdam from the friendly confines of Sandy MacAllaster Field.
