The St. Lawrence University football team fell 66-0 in a Saturday afternoon road contest at Ithaca College.
St. Lawrence now holds a record of 1-3 overall and 0-1 in Liberty League play, as they turn their focus to their first home conference game next Saturday. The Bombers, who received votes in the national poll last week, scored on eight of their first nine possessions to improve to 3-1 and 2-0 in the Liberty League.
The Bombers got the scoring started early, with quarterback Michael Reed linking up with Nicholas Lang, who took the ball 79 yards down the St. Lawrence sideline for the game-opening major 19 seconds into the contest. The point after was good, and the score was 7-0 early. Chris Scully added a six-yard touchdown run later in the quarter, and Reed punched one in himself on the final play of the quarter to make it 21-0.
Ithaca kept rolling in the second quarter, with Reed throwing touchdown passes to Colin Schumm and Antwan Harvey around a 26-yard Andrew Rice field goal to take a 38-0 lead into halftime.
The Bombers added four additional touchdowns in the second half of the game to cement the victory. Anthony Mestre had two of those four as they ended the game up 66-0.
Despite the final score, St. Lawrence had some bright spots.
Rory McGuire punted nine times for 316 yards, a 35.1 average, including a long of 69 yards. This punt was the longest of McGuire's career, and the longest by a Saints' punter since 2014. It's the third-longest boot in Saints program history.
On defense,
Drew Lazcano led the Saints with 10 tackles and a sack, while
Brennan Twombly added six tackles and broke up two passes.
St. Lawrence now returns home after back-to-back road contests and will play in front of generations of St. Lawrence alumni on Laurentian Weekend in the Steve Munn '64 Game against Union College on Friday, October 2. The game is now set for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff, after originally being scheduled for a 7 p.m. kick.
