Three second period goals from
Lilien Benakova,
Kendall Doiron and
Jaylee MacKinnon powered the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 3-1 exhibition win over Concordia University on Friday night at Appleton Arena.
"It was a nice start to the season for our young team," said head coach
Chris Wells. "It was certainly time to drop the puck and get into some game action. We were able to get better as the game went on and will continue to find our game through the weekend with another exhibition game."
All four goals tonight were scored in the second period.
Concordia struck first, as Rosalie Parent redirected a shot from Emilie Lussier, to beat Saints' goaltender
Sami Phelan to make it 1-0 in favor of the Stingers.
About three minutes later, Benakova evened the score. After a give-and-go with
Barbora Jurícková, Benakova slid into the slot and beat Addison Cochrane with a wrister.
Eleven seconds later, Doiron made it 2-1. The play started with a good backcheck from
Sonia Mehta, then a good feed from
Abby Hehl, and a great finish from Doiron, who beat a defender and sent a shot through the legs of Cochrane.
MacKinnon tacked on the third goal for the Saints. Mackinnon used the Concordia defender as a screen and went bar down increasing SLU's lead to 3-1.
All three netminders for the Saints played a period.
Kassidy Lawrence opened with eight saves, while
Sami Phelan made four saves in the second and
Maja Helge finished with six saves in the third. Belle Menda opened the game for Concordia with 12 saves, while Cochrane finished with 10.
St. Lawrence outshot Concordia 25-19 and led in faceoffs 39-16. Concordia went 1-for-1 on the power play.
The Saints will be back on action on Sunday, as they travel to Colgate for their second exhibition game. Puck drop is scheduled for 3 p.m.
